An Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Gumshoe, and Barry Award winner, C. J. Box delivers the second pulse-pounding installment in his critically acclaimed series. Joe does it again. Best thing about Joe is that he's not perfect. He is hopelessly honest about his failures, which dog him from book to book, just as OURS do...

Following a scalding row with her mother, 15-year-old Holly Sykes slams the door on her old life. But Holly is no typical teenage runaway: A sensitive child once contacted by voices she knew only as "the radio people," Holly is a lightning rod for psychic phenomena. Now, as she wanders deeper into the English countryside, visions and coincidences reorder her reality until they assume the aura of a nightmare brought to life.

I just couldn't listen fast enough to get all the British quips of the "mouthy" fifteen-year-old lower middle class school girl using l980's Brit slang in the first 5 chapters. At first I thought my iPod was malfunctioning. Then, the smugly erudite young scholar in the next chapters finished me off with recitation and references that left me dumb(founded.)

Now, I have a BA in English and Speech Communication, a Masters in Social Work, have published poetry and short stories, and dedicated twenty years listening (courtesy of The Teaching Company) to the history, philosophy, mythology, and literature of Eastern and Western Europe. But, I'm lost.

This is a work of fiction. I know the rule for writers is "write what your know about," but you MUST also write about what your READERS know about. Who is this author's audience? The L.A. Times Books section critic?

Admittedly, I haven't gone through this author's previous works...but I didn't think this was a lit classes--miss the first few and flunk the final exam!

Upcoming movie--maybe--but, if you're a Yankee like me, I'd wait for the film.

Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life - steady boyfriend, close family - who has never been farther afield than her tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life - big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel - and now he's pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossy - but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected.

A quiet story about tragedy and loss without the sappy romanticism of "Love Story." Jojo's ability to keep the story taut by not allowing her characters to 'gush" is very refreshing. Kept me straining against the narrative for a break through that never came. The ending brought me to the surface a bit fast...kinda got the bends...but the characters hung around in my head for several days afterward.

In this, his magnum opus, the world’s best known skeptic and critical thinker Dr. Michael Shermer—founding publisher of Skeptic magazine and perennial monthly columnist (“Skeptic”) for Scientific American—presents his comprehensive theory on how beliefs are born, formed, nourished, reinforced, challenged, changed, and extinguished.

Nevada Barr quickly attracted the attention of mystery fans when her first Anna Pigeon mystery, Track of the Cat, appeared. Now she immerses the intrepid park ranger in a perilous search that will take her far below the waters of Lake Superior. As Anna spends her days patrolling its shores, the surface of Lake Superior fills with tourists. In the depths below lie an ancient ship and the bones of its sailors.

"Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness… He was beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I’d never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily…Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other’s most private wounds…and desires."

Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. The recipient of Edgar, Anthony, and Macavity Awards, New York Times best-selling author C. J. Box has won almost every honor in his field. In Breaking Point, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett is glad to catch up with old friend Lyle Pendergast, but then the man goes missing and is named a suspect in the death of two EPA employees. All signs point to Lyle’s guilt, but the more Joe digs into the case, the more he realizes he’s stepped into the middle of a deadly power play.

Joe Pickett is a nice man in a corrupt, politicized system. Joe struggles to hold onto his moral values and his family. Nice details, good character development. Narrator keeps it interesting while capturing Joe's mellow style.
