Audio sounds like it was recorded on a cassette player, much of the time is just transistional music noise. Should not be sold as an Audio book. Wish I had read reviews before purchasing.
Some interesting material at the beginning but eventually turned to tabloids for material. Worth listening but not the best bio of the Queen. Denigrates Prince Charles whenever possible.
Predictable romance novel coupled with questionable premises such as a heroine who abhors slavery but doesn't mind nudity (or murder). Melding 21st century culture norms with 18th century history does not work.
Most of the book is interesting and enjoyable but the author goes to pains to denigrate his subjects when he (the author) strays into political analysis and editorializing rather than biography. Describing one of his main characters as participating in "classic paranoid right wing fantasies" and then labeling him "stupid" is both inaccurate and unprofessional. The author completely fails to understand the politics in the era he describes. But, as poor as the political writing is, the biographical stories are excellent and well worth the time. I recommend the book.
Marvelous story but don't read this if you want to know anything about the motivations and methods of cathedral building.
Listenable, but don't be taken in by the "guide" offered with file. That is only a table of contents - not any printed Greek.
Not a "concise history" - more of a random walk through some interesting and arcane bits of London's history. Marred by filtering historical events through 21st century culture, a tendency toward social commentary and biased architectural criticism.
Nevertheless, worth adding to many other histories of London and worth a listen
An enjoyable listen but flawed by forcing 21st century perspective on historical contexts. Example: Early 1600's piety was just another form of bigotry.(America's Pilgrims) Each episode (chapter) begins with a review of the previous episode and I found that annoying. Perhaps that could be edited out of future BBC Audible offerings. Worthwhile if kept in perspective.
Very interesting and informative for the armchair traveler. A full length recording would be worthwhile. Just don't begin to believe his views on Economic and Monetary policy. Still, all views are useful and time listening to this book is time well spent.
A very good picture of health conditions in some of the poorest conditions in the Western Hemisphere. Farmer, the subject, is almost saintly, but he does have some serious problems becoming politically charged and believing rules are for everyone else. He shares an off-balance world view with of the Harvard elite, yet considers himself quite different. A worthwhile read (or listen).
