  • Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly, and the Making of the Modern Middle East

Based on four years of intensive primary document research, Lawrence in Arabiadefinitively overturns received wisdom on how the modern Middle East was formed. Sweeping in its action, keen in its portraiture, acid in its condemnation of the destruction wrought by European colonial plots, this is a book that brilliantly captures the way in which the folly of the past creates the anguish of the present.

Charles Fred Smith says: "The "Real" Story"
    "Interesting history"

    Story

A well researched and well read version of events in the Middle East in WW I. The character of T. E. Lawrence was larger than life, but was he just another pawn in the British game of imperialism? A great story of Lawrence and other players in that war to end all wars. The narration is outstanding, bringing all of these characters to life.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Karen says: "A classic book *and* a classic audiobook"

    Story

It's obvious why Frank McCourt won a Pulitzer Prize for this book. This is a wonderful story of a young boy's early years growing up surrounded by heartbreaking poverty, a father who was not always there, the stresses of a Catholic upbringing and the death of siblings; but through all of this his upbeat and optimistic attitude towards life comes across on every page. In addition, the narration by the author is absolutely marvelous! This is really a great book.

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Annie M. says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"

    Story

This true story of WW II is one of the most unbelievable stories I have ever heard! What this man went through is difficult to think about, and his survival and return to humanity is an amazing journey, vividly told by the author. Edward Herrmann's narration is outstanding as well, and really brought the story to life.
This is a moving and thought provoking account of how perseverance, faith and forgiveness can conquer any disaster that life brings.

Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

    Jeanne says: "Interesting man"

    Story

The story moves generally in chronological order, beginning with how Steve was put up for adoption, and then tells the almost unbelievable story of how he started building computers in his parent's garage, and eventually how he orchestrated the phenomenal success of Apple. The author discusses the personal and professional successes and failures of Jobs, and gives the listener an insider's view of this very talented man. It is apparent that Steve Jobs' vision and single-minded focus were the drivers of Apple's rise to become the most valuable company in history. This was fascinating listening from start to finish.
