I don’t usually jump on books that are so hyped up as Wallbanger has been. I like to let them settle for a while before I give them a try. I kept seeing other bloggers say it was a must read. That it was funny. I was in the mood for a funny contemporary so I decided to listen to Wallbanger.
I thought that Wallbanger was going to be a hard-core erotic romance but it’s not and I was glad it wasn’t. I loved that Caroline and Simon didn’t sleep together until about ¾ of the way into the book. They don’t have an instant-a-love which is really refreshing. Sure there’s an instant-a-lust but they don’t give into it. They become friends then lovers.
Caroline and her group of friends reminded me of a younger Carrie Bradshaw and her gal pals from Sex and the City. They have dating wows that is just plain funny. They have each other’s backs and are quick to “bitch” each other out. They find themselves in a unique place where they are all single at the same time. But poor Caroline has taken herself off the market after losing her “O”. That’s right she’s missing her “O” as in orgasm. And how did she loose it? The last time she had sex was with a guy she calls the machine gun fucker. You know the kind that bang-bang bangs you. Which reminded me of the episode where Carrie (Sex and the City) has sex with the “jack rabbit”. LOL
The way Caroline goes on and on about her missing “O” liked it’s a person and it’s her best friend was so funny. Yeah it sounds cheesy but it really worked the way Alice Clayton wrote it.
So what’s the worst thing ever for a gal that’s lost her “O”? A neighbor that is hanging out “Os” to what seems like a different woman every night right next door. How does Caroline know what her neighbor is up to every night? The apartment walls are really thin. And that’s also how she knows her neighbor’s name is Simon without even meeting him.
Apparently Simon is a god in bed because Caroline hears the women’s screams, giggles and meows. That’s right MEOWS.
I woke up faster this time, because I knew what I was hearing. I sat up in bed, glaring behind me. The bed was still pulled safely away from the wall, so I felt no movement, but there was sure as hell something moving over there.
Then I heard… hissing?
I looked down at Clive, whose tail was at full puff. He arched his back and paced back and forth at the foot of the bed.
“Hey, mister. It’s cool. We just got a noisy neighbor, that’s all,” I soothed, stretching my hand out to him. That’s when I heard it.
I cocked my head sideways, listening more intently. I studied Clive, who looked back as if to say, “T’weren’t me.”
“Meow! Oh, God. Me-yow!”
The girl next door was meowing. What in the world was my neighbor packing to make that happen?
“Oooh yes, just like that, Simon….Mmmm…meow, meow, meow!”
Clive is Caroline’s male cat and the meowing drives him nuts which just adds to the funniness of the situation.
Heather Smith’s narration of Wallbanger adds to the craziness. She does a really good job with Caroline and her inner monologue. Like so many female narrators she wasn’t masculine enough with the guys but still did a good enough job with them. Her narration of “giggles” was really funny. And she did a great job with the few characters that had foreign accents. Smith is definitely suited for Clayton’s writing.
Between Alice Clayton’s writing and Heather Smith’s performance you get a great romance with funny dialogue, engaging characters and one saucy kitty. I already have the next book; Rusty Nailed loaded on my phone to listen to. I can’t wait to see what Simon and Caroline are up to next.
The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire is the follow-up to the short I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas.
Seriously any author that can work in references to Daryl Dixon, Soft Kitty, My Little Pony (especially Rainbow Dash) and Dr Who into a paranormal romance it they not sounded forced is an author you should be reading!
Gigi aka the human, computer geek:
Gigi is the younger sister of Iris from The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires. Gigi was raised in part by Iris after their parents' death. Iris runs a business that works with vampires and now Iris is one herself. So Gigi is no stranger to a life with vampires. In fact being a human has put her in the minority of her little group of friends/family. But Iris doesn't want Gigi to be sucked (no pun intended) into the vampire world. She only wants her little sister to live a normal and safe human life.
But Gigi can't get one, Mr. Tall Blonde and Bitey, off her mind ever since that toe curly kiss they shared when she was home for Christmas break from college. And then there's little thing where she accepted an internship with the Vampire Council. Gigi is now neck-deep in the vampire world.
Nik aka The Rebound Vamp:
Nik is Mr. Tall Blonde and Bitey, he's also Russian and a long time friend of Gigi's bother-in-law, Cal. Oh, and he works for the Vampire Council. And he has a memory issue.
Nik is in town working for the council and doing Cal a flavor by watching over Gigi. But Cal doesn't know that Nick has taken a hands on approach to watching Gigi.
I was in a listening slump and team of Molly Harper and Amanda Ronconi brought me out of it. (Like I knew they would.) Really the team of Harper and Ronconi is great for a fast and fun listen. Harper pens the quirky characters with a snarky humor and Ronconi's voice brings them to life no other could.
I'm super excited that we are getting other book in the Half-Moon Hollow series, The Single Undead Moms Club, in October!
Disclaimer: I DNF Night Rising with about 4 hours left in the audio.
I've had the Vampire Babylon series on my radar for a few years now, even before I started blogging. I ran across the series in one of my Shelfari groups back in 2010. I marked it as "same day" series to read. Once I saw that the series was released on audio and narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Khristine Hvam, I knew I had to finally try Night Rising.
The best part of Night Rising was narrator, Hvam. She is the real reason I DNF it sooner. So why did I have issues with it?
From the book summary: Stuntwoman Dawn Madison hasn't been on the best of terms with her father since her movie star mother died.
Dawn's mother died not to long after giving birth. I think Dawn was like a month old. So clearly Dawn never met her mother but because the mother was a Marilyn Monroe type and Dawn was a total opposite, lived in her shadow. Ok I guess that could give a kid a complex but really I thought her mommy issues was a little over board.
Dawn is working with her dad's co-workers to find him after he goes missing. Frank (Dawn's dad) is a PI and his boss, Mr. Limpet (But don't call him that for some reason. Yeah I didn't get why everyone kept telling Dawn not to call him by Limpet. Just another confusing thing.) Limpet is a paranormal version of "Charlie" from Charlie's Angels. Instead of a voice coming from a speakerphone, he's voice comes from a TV and he uses the TV to hear and see with but you don't see him.
Dawn either has a really high sexual drive or she's a succubus and doesn't know it?! She hooks up with The Voice (Limpet) but they are not even in the same room. He gets her off with his pyschic ability. Ok I've read PNR with the dude can do that but he was always in the room with the chick and it was added into the physical act. Dawn kept thinking about how she need to recharge with sex. I don't know maybe in future books this is explained, like maybe Dawn's a succubus??
Night Rising was not exactly what I was expecting. The premise was interesting, I mean a stunt woman turned vampire slayer that didn't know that supernaturals were real sounds fun right? Khristine Hvam is what drawled me to the audio and the reason I continued to listen as long as I did but sadly even a favorite narrator could not make me care about the Dawn enough to want to finish the audio.
Off the Grid was originally published in Black Water, a collection of Jane Yellowrock and it takes place between Blood Trade and Black Arts.
Jane is set to the Knoxville, TN area by NOLA Master suck head, Leo, to help solve the case of a missing vampire. Jane finds herself in the middle of a sicko religious cult that treats the women (and girls) has their “heavenly play things”.
While Jane is figuring out what the missing vampire has to do with the cult she runs into a young woman in the woods named Nell.
It doesn’t matter if the team of Faith Hunter and Khristine Hvam get together for a 16+ hour audio or for one that’s just 2 hours long like Off the Grid, they are going to grab you with Jane and entertain the hell out of you.
Off the Grid was a fun and action pack listen in the Jane Yellowrock universal and a nice way to introduce Nell Ingram the leading heroine in Hunter’s “Jane spin-off” series, Soulwood. The first book is titled, Blood of the Earth and it will be hitting the shelves in October 2015. And a little birdie told me that Khristine Hvam will be the narrator. So I’m super excited!
Whether it’s YA, Paranormal Romance or Erotica Romance, Kresley Cole never fails to bring her A game. I’ve come to expect 100% Guarantee satisfaction when it has the name Cole attached to it.
Pretty Woman, Kresley Cole style.
Catarina (Cat) is down on her luck and on the run from her husband. She never stays in one place longer than six months. Why? because her husband, Edwards wants to kill her.
Maksimilian is a million/billionaire (depending on how the market is doing that day) Russian mob boss and brother to Aleksandr (hero from book 1, The Professional). Mak is not quite as scary as Aleksandr but he can still command a room and is feared.
Now here comes the Pretty Woman part. Cat and Mak meet when she comes to his hotel room (ah the penthouse FLOOR! not room) to be his escort for the night. Cat is not a career girl, she’s filling in for her friend that’s the true escort. Mak is Cat’s first and only client. Her six months in Miami is almost up and she needs some fast cash to get her out-of-town before Edward finds her.
After their first night together they can can’t the other one out of their mind. After being drawn back to each other the couple go through a wild ride both sexually and emotionally.
Often! And hot. I think there was even more sex in The Master than there was in The Professional. I’m not complaining! Seriously Mak and Cat have dirty, sweaty week marathon within their two weeks together. It ranges from light kinky like spanking to forced orgasm, nipple claps and oh and let’s not forget the chastity belt.
The Master is not use a sex filled romp. There’s may emotions involved from lust, love, fear and heartbreak and I felt every one of them while listening. Both Mak and Cat have a sad past and it loved how Cole let their stories unfold through the plot.
I’ve listened to all of Kresley Cole’s books that are available on audio and she has been blessed by the narrator gods with great narrators. Kimberly Alexis continues to deliver a great performance for the Game Maker series. I love her Russian accents but I had a little problem with her Spanish accent for Cat. There were a few times it seemed to morph into her Russian accent. But as a whole Alexis’ performance was on point and very enjoyable.
I’m so glad that The Master was not released in serial format! Bring on Dimitri’s book and I have all my fingers and toes crossed that his heroine will be Jess!
Where has C.D. Reiss been?! Wow she brings a new level of writing to the Erotic Romance genre! Really, I can’t think of another book in the genre that I gave a 5 stars rating. Sure there are others that I really like but it’s been a little while.
SONGS OF SUBMISSION: SEQUENCE ONE is books 1 -3 (BEG, TEASE & SUBMIT) in the Songs of Submission series by C.D. Reiss. They were originally released as a serial series and the books in the whole series are being produced in audio book format. I’m so glad that I got to listen to them all together. If I had to wait for TEASE after listening to BEG I would have gone nuts. LOL
We follow the relationship between Monica and Jonathan through them meeting and working through their sexual relationship where neither wants more. But of course after spending sometime together Monica starts to hope for more even though she knows that Jonathan is not capable of more.
But Jonathan keeps Monica coming back for more because of the mind blowing sex between them. But have no fear Reiss doesn’t write just great sex scenes. No Monica and Jonathan are deep characters with a deeper connection. And there are a few interesting side characters that bring something to the party.
While listening to SEQUENCE ONE I laughed, was turned on, on the edge of my seat and heart broken. The writing and narration had me feeling like I was in the story with Monica and Jonathan. SEQUENCE ONE was a total emotional ride and I want to ride it again and again.
Jo Raylan brought C.D. Reiss’s words and characters to life perfectly! Jo’s voice and Reiss’s writing totally sucked me in within the first 20 minutes of the audio. Jo Raylan is a new name but she’s not new to the narration game. She narrates under another name (don’t ask because if I told you, I’d have to kill you. LOL) but even though she’s a pro under another name I’ve got to tell ya it was like listening to another person.
If I had not known Jo used a pseudonym I would have thought, hey she kind of sounds like someone I know but it can’t be the same person because Jo’s pitch and delivery really is something new. Her voice is smooth, seductive and she nails the male voice almost better than the female voices. It’s hard (at least for me) to find a female narrator that can be spot on with the males as well as the females. And the part where Jo sings Monica’s song. WOW
The team of Reiss and Raylan on my must listen list. If they are part of it I want more of it!
I cannot wait for SONGS OF SUBMISSION: SEQUENCE TWO books 4-6 (CONTROL, BURN & RESIST) to be released on audio. We get some Jonathan’s POV and I can’t wait to hear what’s going on in his head.
All good things must come to an end and that's what INSTANT TEMPTATION is to the Wilder series. But Jill Shalvis saved the best for last!
T.J. is the Wilder bother that stays gone for long periods of time taking clients on weeks to month-long treks into the mountains. He uses these trips to feel free and to avoid one spunky blonde tow truck driver that gets his motor running.
Harley is said tow truck drive and she has her hands full taking care of her hippie parents and little sister. Harley is short on her rent and eating cheap so that she can foot the bills for her family. She does all this while working a full-time job and trying to finish college and working an intern job for free in hopes she will get her dream job.
T.J. and Harley bicker like two kids fight over the last piece of candy. But what neither of them will admit is that all the bickering gets them both hot and bothered in another way. Harley does her best to stay away from T.J. because of one night they spent together back in high school. Harley thinks that T.J. doesn't remember the night because she means nothing to him even though her high school crush on him has never died. T.J. can't stop thinking about Harley and can't figure out why she can't stand him.
After the two open up to each other during a trip in the woods all becomes clear and they start to work on a HEA. I've said it before and I'll say it again . . . second chance at love in contemporary romances is one of my favorite tropes.
I'm sad to say that it took me 3 books to get into Liisa Ivary's narration. Now I'm sold on her voice for the Wilder gang and wish there were more books to listen to. If you're looking for a fun and sexy small town romance series you should pick up Jill Shalvis' Wilder series and I recommend it on audio. They are fun and fast listens with just the right about of heat.
As much as I love Mac and Barrons I felt like their story was done. I wanted more Dani with a side of Mac and Barrons. BURNED read like should have come after SHADOWFEVER, IMO. I guess we needed ICED so that we knew more about Dani and to make us care about her.
BURNED read like a filler of sorts. Way too much Mac (never thought I’d say that). I went into ICED wondering if I would like a story from Dani’s POV. I was surprise that I really enjoyed it and I think that’s because we got the Fever world but from other character’s POVs.
Rydon is no Barrons but after listening to BURNED I really like me and see that he is as complex (if not more) than Barrons.
There were a few sprinkled throughout BURNED but honesty they were all predictable, at least to me. Some included some answers to some mysteries in earlier books. Some brought up new questions while one was eye rolling (at least for this reader). In fact the shocker that I guess was supposed to be the biggest is the one I rolled my eyes at. Is the Fever series turning into a daytime soap opera? And that’s the one that kept me from giving BURNED 5 stars. And that cliffhanger was weak by Fever standards.
we've been seeing teasing on KMM's Facebook Page that there would be a 1oth. I had a guess who it would be. But while listening I changed my guess to someone else then I went back to my original guess. But the cliffhanger has me thinking that my two guesses were wrong. But who knows. I don't know enough about this third guess as a character so I'll just wait and see who the 10th is.
BURNED should not be missed by Fever fans. And YES you must read ICED (and all the others) before you read BURNED. It touches on old things from books 1-5 and ICED. Do not read BURNED without being caught up on the series! While I had some issues with BURNED I still enjoyed being back in the Fever world and I can’t wait for the next book.
If you’ve not experience the Fever series on audio you really should! It bring even more richness to Karen’s writing. Phil and Natalie do the Fever characters a great justice.
P.S. Lor was the best part IMO.
P.P.S. As many times as I’ve read/listen to this series BURNED is the first book I’ve reviewed. I plan on going back and reviewing the other books as I do a relisten to them this Fall in preparation for the October release. That is if that release date doesn’t get pushed back by two years.
DEAD OF WINTER was on the top of my most anticipated listens for 2015 and the team of Cole and Galvin delivered!
But I had to take away one star from my normal 5 stars for this series because of the love triangle. Not that it was bad! Yes this is an element in the series that needed to be addressed but maybe not for about 70% of the book. But have no fear Kresley Cole wrote it well. Sure there was some angst but it was not whiny.
In most love triangles I’ve read there is a clear front-runner (at least for me). Cole has made it hard for Evie (and me) to pick which guy she should be with. Just when I think I’ve picked the one I want her with the other guy does something I like and makes me change my mind. Both Jack and Aric (Death) has pros and cons. But I’ve decided that I’m for Aric all the way.
“I take no actions that I wouldn’t publicly recount. If you can’t speak your deeds, then don’t do them.”
That quote along has pushed me 100% over to “Team Death”. Aric might be many things but he has always been honest with Evie.
Ok romance aside we get more information on two of the Arcana Cards, The Lovers. WOW are those two freaky and all kinds of fucked up! We get some of the signature darkness of the series. We get little of the bagmen and slavers, none of the cannibals. So yeah about 70% of the book is about the love triangle.
The ending promises the next book could bring us back to the epic world Kresley Cole has built with her Arcana Chronicles. So I’ll impatiently wait for it and gobble it up like all the others on audio because Emma Galvin continues to knock the narration out of the park! She has the prefect voice for the series.
INSTANT GRATIFICATION is the second book in Jill Shalvis' Wilder series about three brothers that share the same last name. This time around we get middle brother, Stone's story.
Dr. Emma is uptight and only in Wishful for a short time (so she thinks) to run her father's practice while he recovers from a heart attack. Emma is use to running an ER in New York and the very slow pace of Wishful is driving her nuts. But not as nuts as the sexy Stone.
Stone is the glue that keeps the Wilder family together. He's the peace keeper, the one that does all the things the others don't want to do like the paperwork for Wilder Adventures and he's sexy as hell. And he can't wait to get Dr. Emma to loosen up and see what kind of fun they could have together.
Emma and Stone dance around each other for a while but once they start dancing together they really heat of the "pages" of INSTANT GRATIFICATION. If you're looking for a romance where the guy is an alpha outdoorsman and the gal is a city girl who needs a little dirtying up then you need to check out INSTANT GRATIFICATION by Jill Shalvis.
Liisa Ivary's narration is growing on me. Liisa does an excellent job with the male voices and she manages to change her voice for the females characters where her non-dialogue voice is different, instead of it being the same as the heroine's which it is nice. I still think that Liisa's voice sounds a little too mature for these younger couples but that's something I'm willing to over look. I can't wait to listen to the next book, INSTANT TEMPTATION.
I loved seeing Hailey get her HEA with the sexy ranger, Matt. These two prove that opposites do attract.
Lauren Fortgang does an outstanding job as usual with the narration. I enjoyed every minute of TAKEN WITH YOU and I can't wait to listen to FALLEN FOR MAX when it's available on audio.
Stacey and Fortgang is a winning author/narrator combo!
