At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

What disappointed you about Ready Player One?

This book was highly recommended to me by two of my friends. I really, really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't. The 80's pop-culture references were lost on me for the most part, and there are a TON of them. I'm not really sure who this book is aimed at, because it seems to be written for young adults, yet most young adults will be as lost in the 80's references as I was. I seriously feel as if a solid 1/3 of the book is just describing the plot of vaious 80's movies or the gameplay of 80's arcade games. Also I thought the characters were one-dimensional, the plot was predictable, and the writing was downright cheesy at times.

What could Ernest Cline have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I would have loved to see some other points of view besides Wade's. I did not like the entire book being in the first person.

What three words best describe Wil Wheaton’s performance?

    Not the greatest

    Any additional comments?

Like I said, two of my friends really loved this book, so maybe I'm just a hater. I really don't see what they saw in it though. And while I do love Wil Wheaton (TableTop woohoo!), he is no voice actor.
