Dolores Claiborne's elderly employer dies suddenly, apparently from falling down a flight of stairs. This tragedy sparks memories of the day Dolores' husband died...the day of the total eclipse. Suspected by police and townspeople alike, she delivers a story of a disintegrating marriage, and the breaking point reached by a docile woman.

Sandra M Irwin says: "A Great Listen!"
    "Dolores Claiborne....wow"

It took me several months to decide to download this audiobook. I wish I had done it immediately. The book is very good. The reader is terrific. The combination is awesome. Ms. Sternahagen's performance makes Dolores Claiborne come alive.

  • Soulless: An Alexia Tarabotti Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 52 mins)

    Story

Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

Pamela I Greene says: "Amelia Peabody has competition"
    "'It might have been....'"
    Overall

In summary, this audiobook is 10 hours and 52 minutes - which is about six hours too long. It's about a prim-yet-lascivious Victorian spinster and an aging werewolf about whose junk I now know WAY too much.

Although the premise was excellent and the basic plot promising, I felt for most of the book as though I was an unwilling voyeur in some adolescent game of spin-the-bottle. I don't blame the author, because she's got a good imagination and a way with words - or the narrator because she does a pretty good job - but the editor, now, that's a different matter.

This book might have been awesome. But it just wasn't, and I wish I'd spent my time with an Amelia Peabody novel instead.

A chance meeting on a train brought together Lord Ickenham and Bill Oakshott, although being told that the love of his life, Hermione, was engaged to none other than Pongo, Lord Ickenham's nephew, did not make Bill feel like he'd been struck behind the ear. And what with the usual amount of stirring goings-on at Ashendon Manor that include biffings and black eyes and duckings in duck ponds, is there any chance that it will ever work out for poor Bill?

I really enjoyed this audiobook. Wodehouse's writing is excellent, and Jonathan Cecil does a great job of distinquishing the characters' voices. If you need a laugh, this is for you..

I also recommend Uncle Fred in the Springtime with Cecil.

As Wodehouse himself once noted, "Blandings has impostors like other houses have mice." On this particular occasion, there are two imposters, both intent on a dangerous enterprise. Lord Emsworth's secretary, the Efficient Baxter, is on the alert and determined to discover what is afoot - despite the distractions caused by the Honorable Freddie Threepwood's hapless affair of the heart.

Sarah says: "Not terrible - but not a must-have, either"
    "Don't get this version...."
    Overall

I bought this because I have only recently discovered Wodehouse's 'Blandings saga' and wanted to listen to them all. I can't tell much about the quality of the book itself because the audio version is so painful to listen to. You get to hear every gasp for breath, and Davidson doesn't seem to understand Wodehouse - or to be enjoying himself. I wish I had read the other reviewer's advice - instead of buying this version, look for another reader!

The feather-brained Bertie Wooster complicates his life by interceding with the predatory Madeline Bassett on behalf of his friend Gussie Fink-Nottle and finds himself entangled in terrifying misunderstandings. In the mounting storm clouds on the Wooster horizon there is but one ray of comfort: the presence of Jeeves, steadfast and reassuring. No cause has ever been lost while Jeeves was around, and in this uproarious novel the mastermind rises effortlessly to the occasion.

It's hard to rate an excellent book with a reader you did not care for....

P.G. Wodehouse is an excellent author, and his Jeeves books are hystericall funny. Like his other works, this book is very good.

Frederick Davidson, the reader...not so much. I'm sure he's very nice and has many talents, but for this series, he is the wrong voice. He is too sibilant, and his rendering takes a good bit of the humor out of the work. He comes off as an extremely catty Bertie, and more angry than whimsical. I didn't care for the voices of Bertie, Jeeves or the other characters in this reading, and the conssstant hissssing became so overwhelming that I found it difficult to keep listening.

If you can find this book with another reader, buy it instead. Martin Jarvis is the best; Jonathan Cecil and Ian Carmichael are good. I will be replacing this book as soon as I can find a different reader, but I feel as though I wasted a credit on it.

Everyone - even Augustus the cat - has cause to be obliged to Jeeves when he manages to retrieve the infamous Book - the book which lays bare the private lives of three-quarters of the upper classes. And which could prove to be political dynamite at the Market Snodsbury by-election.

The book is quite funny, but the reader Dinsdale Landen does not do it justice. He has a pleasant voice, and I'm sure he's very talented - but he reads too fast, crowding the sentences, and the voices of different speakers are too much alike. I found it difficult to tell who was speaking and when the speaker changed, and I kept wishing that it was Martin Jarvis or Jonathan Cecil reading, instead. It was heavy going, to quote Mr. Wodehouse.....

I'd give it 5 stars if Jarvis or Cecil was reading.
