Ever since running away at the age of fourteen, Paul-Edward, the son of a white landowner and a black slave, has had one dream: to own land every bit as good as his daddy's. While growing up, Paul-Edward loved, and feared, his father, but he loved the land unconditionally. Then, after a rash act of youthful rebellion, he leaves his family behind and vows to succeed on his own. However, for anyone black coming of age in 1880's Mississippi, this is no simple goal.

Where does The Land rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

By far, the best story I have ever heard. I couldn't stop listening and I cried through out the whole last chapter. The ending was more that I could have imagined. I especially loved the narrator. I wish he narrated more of Mildred Taylor's books. (Lynne Thigpen and Ruben Santiago-Hudson are both awesome narrators!) Thank you both, and Mildred Taylor, for such a pleasurable book to listen to!

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the whole book...but the ending was my favorite.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Without giving it away, I loved the surprise at the end, when the wagon stopped and Caroline & Nathon thought it was just to rest for the night. (I don't want to give away the best part to anyone reading this that hasn't had a chance to read or listen to the book)

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Persistence and honesty always triumph over wickedness and greed...so never give up on your dreams...

    Any additional comments?

These stories by Mildred Taylor are priceless. My daughter, a 6th grader, introduced me to 'Roll of Thunder, here my cry', when they were reading it in language arts class this year. She talked about it every day until I finally had to read it myself. Now I can't get enough of these wonderful stories by Mildred Taylor. Everyone should read these stories. They're wonderful (sad & happy) stories of our past that should never be forgotten.

What made the experience of listening to Gods and Kings the most enjoyable?

I absolutely love how this author writes. I've always loved the stories out of the old testament but Lynn Austin's skill of writing made the events and the characters come to life. It also caused me dig into my bible and reread these wonderful accounts, which I hadn't done in a few years. The story line is fascinating and I was enthralled by the narrator as well. (Suzanne Toren does an amazing job!) If I could give more than a 5 star rating, I would. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gods and Kings?

One of the most memorable moments had to be when his brother was being sacrificed. The story is so well written and performed, I could literally feel the heat of the fire on my face as it was being described in such detail. I have many other memorable moments, but that one really stood out.

Have you listened to any of Suzanne Toren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, "Return to Me: The Restoration Chronicles". I loved that one as well and would highly recommend it to anyone. Seriously worth using a credit for. I'm hooked on these books now. I'm going to hate it when I've read them all! (Please write more!)

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried when the King discovered his grandfather was still alive.

    Any additional comments?

I'm so glad I downloaded this book. "Return to Me" and "Gods & Kings" were both very hard to put down. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Raised on a South Carolina plantation as the house pet of her white master's daughter, Kitty never made a decision for herself. Now, as a young adult, she must preserve her faith while making the biggest decision ever: stay with her master and go south to avoid the Yankees or run away tonight to the North with Grady, the field slave she has come to love.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Light to My Path to be better than the print version?

This entire series of books is amazing. I couldn't stop listening to any of them! The way the author unfolds the story lines and intertwines the characters throughout each book is brilliant. I especially loved the way she ends each story, not leaving any loose ends. The endings are always full of surprises & tearfully joyful. Simply breathtaking stories. I hated the series to end. The narrator, Christina Moore, does an awesome job giving each character his or her own voice. She really makes the stories come to life. I wish she narrated every book by this author.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Light to My Path?

Kitty finally standing up to Missy. I jumped for joy at her bravery.

Have you listened to any of Christina Moore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This whole series is breathtaking. I wish there were 10 more books in this series!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Freedom from slavery.

    Any additional comments?

Please write more books in this series and use the same narrator!

Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year, the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black, to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride, for no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away.
