I was captivated. Buffa's storytelling capabilities were a surprise and a delight, given that I had no idea what to expect. And the reader - wonderful! Combine Buffa's skill with words and construction, imagery and character, with Predovic's performance and development of the characters as people, and it's truly spellbinding. This is a must-read in its genre!
It took a long time for this book to get going. The early parts were confusing and a bit disconnected. Once it got rolling, it was definitely more engaging.
The idea of a resurrected character, male in a female body, with missing memories, is intriguing. But sometimes it was just tedious.
I'd say that the characters could be better developed, and the sweeping mysteries could be less annoying.
I enjoyed it, and will probably listen to more.
I'm captivated by this book. The details, the characters, the plot all just grabbed me and flowed along to the end. The fact that this is performed - not just read - also makes it stand out from the run-of-the-mill audiobook. Each of the actors is believable, and makes a significant contribution to making the book come to life. I will certainly be reading the entire series.
I contend that one of the marks of an outstanding writer is one who creates characters so real, including flaws and failings, that I find myself thinking "Why would you do that? Don't do that!" or "C'mon - everyone KNOWS what's going to happen here. Are you just blind?" Fortunately for me, the characters never respond.
Martin has created some very real characters and an amazingly detailed environment. The skill with which he paints everything from the people to the scenery is impressive.
I've listened to all three books in this series, and I was totally captivated from beginning to end.
Being a techie myself, I found much of the detail in this novel to be fun and stimulating. I wondered how much of it would be beyond the understanding of non-techies. That aside, I found the development of the characters to be excellent, the suspense and twists fun, and was engaged from beginning to end. I might have enjoyed a bit more closure at the end, but would heartily recommend the book to anyone who enjoys suspense, good character development, and a tight and twisting plot.
I found this book to be amusing, and the plot to be somewhat obvious. Perhaps I'm spoiled by my enjoyment of Michael Connelly and Tom Clancy - suspenseful, detailed plots that catch you up and drag you along. I found Janet Evanovich's work to be uninspired and cute. The characters are more caricatures.
