  • The Pillars of the Earth

    • UNABRIDGED (40 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Ken Follett
    • Narrated By John Lee
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

    CynNC says: "Captivating"

Although encouraged by many positive reviews, I was disappointed. The plot plods, and the characters are barely two-dimensional. I stopped listening when the narrative of the brutal rape of a sixteen year old girl crossed the line from compassionate to pornographic.

  • Nightwing

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 18 mins)
    • By Martin Cruz Smith
    • Narrated By Richard Ferrone

A community in the southwestern United States falls prey to a plague of vampire bats with a virus which compels them to feed on everything in their path. Martin Cruz Smith, author of the best-selling novels, Gorky Park and Polar Star, mixes Indian mythology with virology in this masterful thriller.

    S. Burrows says: "Excellent book."
    "Well Crafted Thriller"
If you could sum up Nightwing in three words, what would they be?

    Rich and compelling!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nightwing?

The rich descriptions of native American culture and the Arizona backcountry. In addition to a good story, the treatment of the characters was neither conventional nor sentimental.

What about Richard Ferrone’s performance did you like?

Great balance of tone and inflection without distracting from the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Overall, just very well written with enough genuine science mixed with native mysticism to make it a very compelling listen.

    Any additional comments?

If you enjoy stories that are set in the Southwest, you will want to treat yourself to Nightwing!

  • Millionaire Upgrade

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Richard Parkes Cordock
    • Narrated By Nigel Acheson

Imagine finding yourself sitting next to a self-made millionaire for eight hours on a long-haul international flight. Imagine that person was prepared to share with you the secrets of their success. For one lucky person this actually happened. Inspired by a true story, Millionaire Upgrade is the tale of one very experienced entrepreneur and one very lucky passenger.

Philippe says: "A complementary book for the Millionaire series"
    "Great Freebie"

I wasn't sure what to expect with this free download. It is an introduction to the Millionaire MBA series, and well worth the listen. I think it demonstrates that we are all just an inspiration away from creating the life of our dreams, and the importance of staying aware for those clues to success. I've not subscribed to the Millionaire MBA series, but will try at least one. I really enjoy the perspective this takes from a Brit's point of view, rather than an American's.

  • The One Minute Millionaire: The Enlightened Way to Wealth

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Mark Victor Hansen, Robert G. Allen
    • Narrated By Mark Victor Hansen, Robert G. Allen

The co-creator of the Chicken Soup series, Mark Victor Hansen, and the personal finance author, Robert Allen, have come together in a collaboration that combines inspiration with know-how. Uniquely organized, The One Minute Millionaire combines fiction and nonfiction to show the way to true wealth. Half the book is a fable about a woman faced with a terrible dilemma: Michelle must earn a million dollars in 90 days to keep her family together.

Kevin says: "In the wrong category?"
    "Solid Advice"

Although not a purely inspirational work, this gem is packed with all the hints and keys to becoming remarkably successful. It is a roadmap written by two men who have created remarkably successful lives and want to share what they have learned. Their goal of creating 1 million millionaires reflects their altruism and generosity.

The novella in Part 2 is a little cheesy (OK, ALOT cheesy!) and not a great work of fiction, but it is effective in building on the concepts in Part 1. Keep an open mind and listen for the concepts and how they can apply to your personal situation. You never know where a great idea might get its spark!

I recommend this to anyone with an interest in wealth building from a level of highest integrity.

  • A Dirty Job

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Christopher Moore
    • Narrated By Fisher Stevens
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

    colleen says: "I loved it!"

At first this book was promising; interesting story line and some good prose. The development of the protagonist as an aide to Death implied some genuine insights into relationships, loss and redemption. It's degeneration into monster ravens, squirrel-people, huge caverns under the streets of San Francisco and abandonment of moral standards of any kind left me wishing the book would end. Just too bizarre for my taste.

  • Into the Wild

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Jon Krakauer
    • Narrated By Philip Franklin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself.

Craig Mitchell says: "A Book that Never Left Me"

Highly recommended. I was mesmerized as much by the author's account of his own extreme wilderness climbs as by Chris McCandless' journey of self-discovery. If you do buy this, listen again (and again) to Chris' letter to the old man who befriended and wanted to adopt him. It is a challenge to us all to forego the comfort and safety of ordinary lives and seek instead the raw experience of life without boundaries. His extremism cost him his life, but his legacy is a reminder to live each day, not merely exist.

  • Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
    • Narrated By Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good.

    Jesse says: "Changed my thoughts"
    "A Growing Awakening"

For anyone who has followed the career of Wayne Dyer, this introduction and exploration of the Tao is as compelling for appreciating his own spiritual growth as it is for the insights and lessons offered. If you are part of the global groundswell of growing spiritual enlightenment, this book will deepen your understanding of our universal connection and offer practical advice for living within the space of silence and compassion. The more you listen, the more is revealed. Thank you, Wayne, for inviting us along while you explore!

  • Odd Thomas

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By David Aaron Baker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"The dead don't talk. I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn.

    Denise says: "No Doubting Thomas"
    "Wonderful Narrative/Narrator"

Immensely entertaining. Koontz has great style and prose, Baker's delivery is gentle but well modulated, with each character given the right amount of distinction. Expect both smiles and tears, and a few goose-bumps!
