  • The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World

    • ORIGINAL (24 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By The Great Courses, Robert Garland
    • Narrated By Professor Robert Garland

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

    Mark says: "Tantalizing time trip"
    "Entertaining and Facinating"
What did you love best about The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World?

This book will take you into the lives of common people. Professor Garland is down to earth and well spoken and adds a touch of humor. I loved this. My all time favorite audio book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes....both. And I am so very grateful to live in this era. Our ancestors had it very tough.

    Any additional comments?

You will find many of your own beliefs and customs are rooted a long way back in history. I highly recommend this book even if you are not a history buff.

  • 11-22-63: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (30 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Craig Wasson

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Kelly says: "I Owe Stephen King An Apology"
    "Where was the editor?"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who needs the obvious spoon feed to them again and again. Someone who's intelligence is not easily insulted. Someone who has a very high tolerance for boredom.

Has 11-22-63 turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. I have really enjoyed and been intrigued by S. Kings work. But to quote a comic strip I saw about him...

What three words best describe Craig Wasson’s performance?

Well, he had not to much to work with, but a little overdone.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Contempt. As in roll my eyes and you have got to be kidding

    Any additional comments?

Still a fan....we all have our off days.

  • The Help

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Kathryn Stockett
    • Narrated By Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and others

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "So very well done!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

In a heart beat! I read the book and loved it. I bought the audio book because I just wanted MORE or The Help. The proformance of the readers was so close to what was in my own head, especially Abaline. I will surely listen to this again. Unique story, pulls all the heart strings!

What did you like best about this story?

It is so hard to believe this was what life was like for the women in this book in such recent history. Not only the racism, but the life the white women were expected to life too. We have really all come a long way. And I think it is important we do not forget.
