In the autumn of 1558, church bells across England ring out the joyous news that Elizabeth I is the new queen. One woman hears the tidings with utter dread. Amy Dudley, wife of Sir Robert, knows that the bells she hears will summon her husband once more to power, intrigue, and a passionate love affair. Philippa Gregory paints a picture of a country on the brink of greatness, a young woman grasping at her power, a young man whose ambition is greater than his means, and the wife who cannot forgive them.

I could not finish this story. I found Elizabeth to alternate between being weak willed and simpering and shrill and annoying. She never was strong never made a decision. She was lead around by the men of her court by the nose most of the time and by her libido the rest. I kept waiting for her to be strong but with the exception of rare intrigues she was mostly weak. This was not an enjoyable interpretation of Elizabeth.

The story was made all the worse by the awful narration. The voices used for both Amy and Elizabeth were difficult to listen to. Overall between the unrelatable Elizabeth of story and the difficult to listen to narration, I could not finish this story.

Deep within the Wood, a young woman lies dead. Not a mark on her body. No trace of her murderer. Only her chipped glass slippers hint at her identity. The Woodcutter, keeper of the peace between the Twelve Kingdoms of Man and the Realm of the Faerie, must find the maiden’s killer before others share her fate. Guided by the wind and aided by three charmed axes won from the River God, the Woodcutter begins his hunt, searching for clues in the whispering dominions of the enchanted unknown. But quickly he finds that one murdered maiden is not the only nefarious mystery afoot....

When out-of-shape IT technician Roen wakes up and starts hearing voices in his head, he naturally assumes he’s losing it. He isn’t. As of last night, he has a passenger in his brain - an ancient alien life-form called Tao, whose race crash-landed on Earth before the first fish crawled out of the oceans. Over the millennia his people have trained human heroes to be great leaders, to advance our species at a rate far beyond what it would have achieved on its own. Split into two opposing factions - the peace-loving, but under-represented Prophus, and the savage, powerful Genjix - the aliens have been in a state of civil war for centuries.

The people of Earth now know that the human Colonial Union has kept them ignorant of the dangerous universe around them. For generations the CU had defended humanity against hostile aliens, deliberately keeping Earth an ignorant backwater and a source of military recruits. Now the CU’s secrets are known to all. Other alien races have come on the scene and formed a new alliance - an alliance against the Colonial Union. And they’ve invited the people of Earth to join them. For a shaken and betrayed Earth, the choice isn't obvious or easy.

So I had mixed feelings. I loved the story it was so engaging. I didn't mind the serial format. You just have to keep it in mind when listening to the stories. I felt the pace was great and I really wanted to know what happened next but that was just it. I kept expecting to find out the big answers to all the questions and ... cliff hanger. I felt cheated.

Also the dialogue tags. Could the narrator have just skipped them? Is that allowed?

As a physician I am always looking for good nutrition information to recommend for my patients. I think this is a good concise look at nutrition, what to eat and why and why its better to get vitamins and minerals from foods than from supplements. I only wish the course book she mentions was available since it seems to have extra information that i think would be helpful for the reader. If there were supplemental information, then it would have 5 stars.

  • Their Eyes Were Watching God

Why we think it’s a great listen: Zora Neale Hurston’s classic novel begs to be read aloud, and Ruby Dee answers the challenge with utter perfection, capturing the wide range of characters and their diverse accents with grace and power. Their Eyes Were Watching God is the luminous and haunting novel about Janie Crawford, a Southern Black woman in the 1930s, whose journey from a free-spirited girl to a woman of independence and substance has inspired writers and readers for close to 70 years.

I had a hard time reading the printed text because I generally have a hard time reading anything written in dialect. I am even annoyed when I get misspelled text messages from relatives written in dialect because I have to reconstruct what they are supposed to say. After reading the text, I thought an audiobook version would be lovely but I have to disagree with most reviewers. This is a beautiful love story and although the main character is older in the novel she strikes me as in her 40s during the telling of the story. Hearing Ruby Dee's narration is sort of like having your grandmother tell you about her love story. Although she did a great job, it took me out of the story a bit and I would have enjoyed a younger voice.

In "Undead Sublet" by Molly Harper, executive chef Tess Maitland is banned from her five-star kitchen in Chicago to recover from "exhaustion". Jessica Sims's "Out With a Fang" features Ruby Sommers, a lonely were-jaguar who signs up for a blind date through the paranormal dating agency Midnight Liaisons.

If you have no idea what else to use your credit on and you really really love Molly Harper then use your credit on this. The first story makes very little sense well is skipable. The second short story is great. Molly Harper pulls you into a nice short Half Moon Hollow tale. It feels like one of her novels on a small scale with all the characters you came to love: Jane Jameson, Dick and Andrea Cheney and Gabriel. The third story is just OK. Its listenable but the story is thin not well developed and occasionally irritating. So I would only recommend this if you truly love Molly Harper and don't want to miss any Half Moon Hollow happenings.

    Story

This was a good book and well narrated. The narration made the book. I feel like I probably would not have enjoyed reading this book but listening to it was amazing because the narration was so well done. It was very graphic however and very violent and I wouldn't advise listening to this before going. I was a bit unprepared for the level of violence but it felt honest and not there just for show. It only loses a star because sometimes I had to take the headphones out because I didnt want to hear what happened to the poor people in the story and felt a little disturbed by the whole thing.
