  • Water for Elephants

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Sara Gruen
    • Narrated By David LeDoux, John Randolph Jones
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

    "Wow...Loved It"

Not a circus fan but loved this story..... it was done well and held my attention. Good characters and good story with a nice ending, so many writers struggle with a good ending.

  • The Shack

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Wm. Paul Young
    • Narrated By Roger Mueller

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare.

    "Ok, But Not Great"

Personally I think this book is getting way too much play time. Being a non-christian I only read this book at the urging of a couple of friends. It changed their lives......not mine. It was shallow, with a dumb ending and simple watered down antidotes on how to live your life. Just ok for me.

  • The Help

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Kathryn Stockett
    • Narrated By Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and others

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

    "Amazing Amazing Amazing"

Love this book. I got so engaged with a piece of literature that I was sad when it ended. This was truly an exciting book that touched every emotion from sadness, anger to laughing out loud. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys just a good story with great character development and interaction. The author transported me to a place in time.

  • Horns: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Joe Hill
    • Narrated By Fred Berman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache, and a pair of horns growing from his temples. At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances.

    "One Star Is Too High"

I hung in with this book purely to see if there was a great ending (there was no ending). Blah blah blah what was the point in all this. What a waste of time. Boring, jumbled, disjointed, poor character interaction. Basically what the hell does this all mean. It left me not wanting anymore from Joe Hill, it will take some time before I try another. Stay away from this book. I have enjoyed his past work but this was horrible......did I mention it was horrible?

  • Hannibal Rising

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 3 mins)
    • By Thomas Harris
    • Narrated By Thomas Harris
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Hannibal Lecter emerges from the nightmare of the Eastern Front, a boy in the snow, mute, with a chain around his neck. He seems utterly alone, but he has brought his demons with him. Hannibal's uncle, a noted painter, finds him in a Soviet orphanage and brings him to France, where Hannibal will live with his uncle and his uncle's beautiful and exotic wife, Lady Murasaki.

    Bev says: "Surprised"
    "Bad, Bad, Bad"

Even one star seems to high for this selection. Big fan of the Hannibal series. I believe that it ends here for me. I will choose to fill in the gaps myself. This book was horrible. There was not really a story at all. You still don't understand why he does what he does. It makes sense why he went after the characters in this book but why did he continue. Disappointing does not even cover how I feel about this book. Harris should be ashamed to have this published.

  • The Ruins

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Scott Smith
    • Narrated By Patrick Wilson

The Ruins follows two American couples enjoying a pleasant, lazy beach holiday together in Mexico. On an impulse, they go off with newfound friends in search of one of their group, the young German who, in pursuit of a girl, has headed for the remote Mayan ruins, site of a fabled archeological dig.

    Art says: "The Plant"
    "Just ok for me"

It had a good plot but there were holes and not enough background info to answer "why" or "how did this happen"? That really is all I can say without giving more away. Characters were not really all that believable. This would make a good movie with some Hollywood flair added. It was just ok for me. Although my wife enjoyed it more than I did. It seemed like a long trip to the final conclusion.
