Raised on the battlefield and in the most beautiful Moorish palace in the world, sent to England alone at the age of 16 to take her place in a court where she couldn't speak the language, and abandoned and forced to endure poverty after the death of her husband, Katherine remained a woman of indomitable spirit, unwavering faith, and extraordinary strength. Philippa Gregory brings to life one of history's most inspiring women and creates one of the most compelling characters in historical fiction.

  • Slaughterhouse-Five or The Children's Crusade: A Duty Dance with Death

Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes 'unstuck in time' after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

    "Just couldn't get into it"
    Overall

Let me preface this review by saying that I've read other Vonnegut novels and loved them. I thought I'd give this one a listen, but I just couldn't get into it- I found my mind wandered elsewhere and when I returned I was lost. Ethan Hawke is a great narrator and the story description sounded "Vonnegut-enough" and maybe I am just a literary dunce. I listened for about an hour and a half, but then had to switch to another book.

America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

I read the glowing reviews for The Road and thought I'd give it a shot. I am so glad I did. It is a moving story about a young boy and his father's journey during what may be the aftermath of an atomic bomb (the author never says). Warning: there is a small amount of graphic cannibalism, but it was more shocking and eye-opening than truly gross.

The characters are fantastic and the plot moves along at a good pace. Likewise, I never found myself asking "when is this going to end?" as I have in the past. I truly recommend this book.

In the astonishing work by the author of the best sellers The Robber Bride and The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood takes listeners back in time and into the life and mind of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the 19th century.

    Overall

I really enjoyed this book and listened to it twice. However, I did feel slightly "cheated" and wished for the unabridged version because I felt I was missing details so I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. If you can get your hands on the unabridged version, I would definitely recommend it. If not, you will still enjoy it.

    The narrator was good.

"ok, but not what I expected"
    Overall

In general, I love reading (and hearing)about historical events and people. This book wasn't what I expected at all. It was too wrapped up in detail about the fair. I got lost on who was who. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, but this book definitely was not for me. If you love detail, this is it.
