It explained with great clarity the complexities of, not only our relations with Afghanistan but also with Pakistan. The only common element seems to be widespread misunderstanding and mistrust.
I also learned that we had clearly identified the threat from Osama Bin Laden back during the mid 1990s but permission to neutralize him was denied by then President Clinton due to his personal political difficulties at that particular time.
The research for this book was extensive and I was astonished that so much of the material is now declassified.
No single character because so many of the characters are facinating.
His tone , his delivery and the facility to smoothly move through so many difficult names and accents added an additional flavor of authenticity to the story
No foreign power has succeeded in this region since Alexander the Great. Even the people in charge today in Pakistan and Afghanistan, are not really in charge. So,...... we must ask ourselves why are we Americans wasting lives and treasury in this ungovernable wasteland?
This is clear understandable description of the events that led to the rise of Hitler and eventually WW2. It is gripping.
If the allies had some courage they could have stopped Hitler's forward march when he invaded Czechoslovakia and left his western front virtually unprotected. If his generals had any courage they could have overthrown him in 1937/38 when there was strong opposition among many of them to the ambitions of Hitler involving Germany in another war. They were just as "gutless" as the English and French leadership. They allowed evil to not only exist but to grow in strength. Only the Russians seem have had a true fix on Hitler's ambitions and negotiated not only some time for themselves to build up their strength, but also to have Germany supply them with critical arms, technology and materials that they later used in defeating Germany.
In retrospect, the most lasting impression with which I was left, was that Hitler used the tactics of a schoolyard bully to intimidate just about every possible opponent............and it worked!
It is Unique
The ease in which he switched accents and made it all so understandable
Would I have like to ........YES. However, 53 hours would be stretching it.
I have wanted to read this book for 40 years but always put it on the long finger because of the time commitment. Having it on my ipod allowed me to listen to it in my car, on the beach, working in the yard, at the gym etc.
