No wonder it's so hard to lose weight, our bodies are designed to keep weight on at all costs; it's a matter of survival. It's embedded in our DNA. Our diet has changed dramatically over the past ten thousand years, but our genetic blueprint has not, our bodies are not designed to process the types of food we are fed today.

    Jill says: "Ultra Metabolism"
    "Now this makes sense"
    Overall

I liked this book but I wish there were more resources for how to employ the advice given in the book. The author often says "consult your doctor" but truth is, I think my doctor is not quite cutting edge to know about this stuff yet.

I wanted to be wowed by this book but I wasn't. I suppose it was ok but I didn't get much out of it.

"It's who you know." "I don't have time." "I'm too old." "That's just the way I am." These crippling statements deny our power to change our lives. In this program, the celebrated author of 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself teaches you how to stop telling yourself these lies that prevent you from being your best.

and get this book. The content is great, very helpful. The narrator could be a little more animated but he's passable. It's a good solid book with good solid advice.

I've had this book for years but could not get past the first several pages. I tried it as an audio book with much more success. I truly appreciate this book and the lessons within. It's a good read, I reccommend it.

Ellen DeGeneres published her first book of comic essays, the #1 best selling My Point...and I Do Have One, way back in 1996. Not one to rest on her laurels, the witty star of stage and screen has since dedicated her life to writing a hilarious new book. That book is this audiobook.

Heidi says: "Ellen's latest book- The Funny Thing Is..."
    "That actually wasn't so funny"
    Overall

Ellen needs an audience or you need to read this book to yourself. This book is written and delivered like a stand up act but it's got no energy because there is no audience. This book is one of those books you need to read, not have read to you.

  • The Mothman Prophecies

    Story

West Virginia, 1966. For thirteen months the town of Point Pleasant is gripped by a real-life nightmare that culminates in a tragedy that makes headlines around the world. Strange occurrences and sightings, including a bizarre winged apparition that becomes known as the Mothman, trouble this ordinary American community. And journalist John Keel, arriving to investigate the freakish events, soon finds himself an integral part of an eerie and unfathomable mystery.

    Marc says: "Smart, compelling, disturbing"
    "I'm terrified of aliens"
    Overall

So I read this book to conquer my fear. It all seems so fantastic, I'm not sure I can believe (which really helped with my fear of aliens) I like the narrator and the subject kept my interest. I had never heard of this before and have not seen the movie. He is an expert at building conspiracy theories. I do wonder if it's true or if he's just a bit touched.

  • Self-Made Man: One Woman's Journey into Manhood and Back Again

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 36 mins)

    • Narrated By Norah Vincent
    Overall

    Performance
    (47)
    Story
    (48)

Following in the tradition of John Howard Griffin (Black Like Me) and Barbara Ehrenreich (Nickel and Dimed), Norah Vincent absorbed a cultural experience and reported back on what she observed incognito. For more than a year and a half she ventured into the world as Ned, with an ever-present five o'clock shadow, a crew cut, wire-rim glasses, and her own size 11 1/2 shoes, a perfect disguise that enabled her to observe the world of men as an insider.

    Holly says: "Abridged"
"How can such an interesting topic be so boring?"
    Overall

I am dissappointed in this book. It sounded like an interesting read and I exercise while I listen to books so it was a surprise when this one made me want to go to sleep. I think it's her voice, she conveys no emotion whatsoever, it sounds like a robot and that makes it hard to believe she could interact with the people in this book so effectively. She sounds bored and unimpressed with her experience and by extension she has made me bored and unimpressed with it as well. I also don't like the level of manipulation she employs to "research" this topic. To me it's a simple justification for sadistic interactions with strangers. I think she is lacking in character and I don't like her book.

  • Anansi Boys

    Performance
    (1788)
    Story
    (1800)

Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

    A. Hawley says: "Beautifully narrated"
    "An Excellent Adventure"
    Overall

I really enjoyed this book. It was so entertaining and vividly written. The person who read it was top notch. I tried to find other books he'd narrated but to no avail. I liked the characters more than the plot and in some places the plot lost me but overall I wish I had more books like this one. I loved it.

  • A Piece of Cake

    (120)
    Story
    (125)

There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, or homelessness. Cupcake Brown survived all these things before she'd even turned 20.

Kim says: "Amazing , Brutal, Inspiring"
    "FANTASTIC"
    Overall

This book is inspiring without being preachy. I really appreciate the authors honesty. It was a great read but painful in places because of her horrible life situations. The narrator is one of the best I've heard (I heard a sample of the one read by the author and it didn't sound as good, go with the unabridged read by Bahni Turpin and you'll have a better experience). Well worth the money and time.

  • A Confederacy of Dunces

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 32 mins)
    • By John Kennedy Toole
    • Narrated By Barrett Whitener
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready
    Overall
    (1883)
    Performance
    (901)
    Story
    (904)

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pulitzer Prize-winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter". His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures.

    Jon says: "Well Done"
    "So glad it's over"
    Overall

This book is excruciating. It was a challenge to finish because of the horrible narration coupled with the lack of plot. All these characters had were problems, unsolvable problems because they were all too lazy and selfish to fix anything. It was a frustrating read. Someone please invent a time machine so I can reclaim my mispent 16 hours. Who cares if it won the Pulitzer. It's tremendously tedious.
