A rollicking good time. Well written but keeping that element of fun that make you want to keep listening.
The plot was well conceived and told very well. The details about the folly and other places visited were a treat to read. Fantasy can be to fluffy or the 180 to chiseled and edgy. This book struck a good balance with humanity, real police work and credulity.
Having never been to London, the reader added to the story with inflections that helped flesh out the 'feeling' for the area they were working in.
The Ladies and Gentlemen, The Lords and Ladies of the Rivers of London.
I really enjoyed this book. Looking forward to the 4th Peter Grant book.
The Eyre Affair
I have to say, I had a rollicking good time listening to The Eyre Affair.
I note that some reviews suggest that the names were hard to follow, I don’t agree. I found the names funny and individual enough to follow easily.
The story was a bibliophile’s delight. The allusions were terrific and showed a solid knowledge of some of my favorite books. The alternative universe was a delight. The main character was believable and interesting. I did think her romance with her ex was a ‘bit’ heavy handed, but it was not the center of the story.
The idea that a society exists that loves books as much as they do in Fforde’s novel was very appealing. His ideas and writing show a very original mind and voice. Fforde built enough tweaks in the system to make it interesting and yet it stayed believable.
I look forward to more Tuesday Next novels.
The story was well developed and had a very tantalizing back story.
I don't think anyone else writes like Vachss. There were some parallels to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series, but only because the subject matter covered some similar ground; built in system of violence against women.
The flash backs to when the protagonist and his partner met.
A very well done story. The characters were interesting and the timeline flowed very well.
This was the first Rhys Bowen book I tried. I have tried another as well. I enjoyed both.
It felt a tad cut off, as if the author/editor wanted to make 'sure' I knew there would be more to the series.
It kept me on the treadmill!
Certain of my friends, absolutely. Friends who enjoy sci-fiction or urban paranormal, I have suggested it to that.
Probably Vidocq. He has a large capacity for putting up with Stark and has a rich and interesting past.
I listened to him in The Lock Artist, by Hamilton. MacLeod Andrews' performance was better in this story I believe.
Definitely, but one does need sleep sometimes and work. Work can get in the way, but paves the path for American Express so I can keep buying books.
The characters were well developed which made the unusual parts of the story more believable.
I don't recall specifically, but it was a well done narration.
I think I would enjoy taking the chief and his wife out to dinner. They seemed like a terrific couple. Caring, smart and very accepting of Odd Thomas.
Much like Six Glasses that Changed the World and other historical specific books, this one is a fun cruize through history in 15 cars.
The background story on how cars are developed.
spoiler - but it was good :)
No, it was fine to listen to back and forth to work. I enjoyed it.
Design, Engineering, Speed, Safety, Fuel and the Presidency of the United States all in one well read package.
The understanding of how French law views patents and how section on how the FDA got their fangs.
He sounded engaged.
Well researched and interesting. Very 'readable'.
Jim Colby's reading was fine. I would listen to another book he read. As for Chuck Palahniuk I am not sure I would read another of his books.
I would recommend it to certain friends, it has some interesting questions to pose.
I believe it has been. I have not seen it.
The writing was well done. The crudity, debasement and psychosis were abundant. The characters were interesting, the story had some original elements.
Equally good. The narrator does a fine job and the book takes to its audio form very nicely.
The weekend of development. An idea, a group of young men and an amalgam of dreams come to life.
Can't see a change for this one.
Well done story, excellent characters and very well researched. It felt very real, very lifelike and was very well written.
