Man’s struggle against the sea is a theme that has created some of the world’s most exciting stories. Now, in the tradition of Moby Dick comes a New York Times best seller destined to become a modern classic. Written by journalist Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm combines an intimate portrait of a small fishing crew with fascinating scientific data about boats and weather systems.

Waste of money and time. Both the writer and the narrator failed to bring this event or the people involved to life. I enjoy nonfiction and documentaries but I could not finish this book, it was so boring. That about says it all because a book has to be really poorly done for me to drop it part way through, especially when I pay for it.

I'm writing this review on the beginning units so it will be of use to anybody contemplating trying these lessons. I have all three phases and have been in China and I would highly recommend this course. For me, these have been very useful tools for laying the ground work for speaking Mandarin. With only these lessons I have been able to get around in China and generally convey what I need.

No other narrative from within the corridors of power has offered as frank and intimate an account of the making of the modern Chinese nation as Ji Chaozhu's The Man on Mao's Right. Having served Chairman Mao Zedong and the Communist leadership for two decades, and having become a key figure in China's foreign policy, Ji now provides an honest, detailed account of the personalities and events that shaped today's People's Republic.

Would you listen to The Man on Mao's Right again? Why?

A good book. I have listened to it more than once. The personal notes on public events in China provided at different look at China during the Mao years and since. I enjoyed reading remembering the events and then seeing them from a different angle. Nicely done. You can't help but wish Ji Chaozhu all the best.

Learn another language the way you learnt your own. You learnt your own language naturally and enjoyably: now you can learn Mandarin Chinese in the same way.

    "Horrible narrator"
    Overall

I love the story and have read it a couple of times so I was highly motivated to get the audiobook. I listened to the sample and thought the narrattion was poor but not insuperable. I was wrong! The narration is extremely flat and becomes increasing grating the more you listen. Don't get this audiobook. Wait for it to be redone.

In April 1144, Brother Cadfael leaves his monastery once more, this time in the company of Heledd, a young woman desperate to escape from an arranged marriage, and the youthful Brother Mark, who is representing the bishop on a matter of church diplomacy. Cadfael does not foresee trouble on their errand, but then the travellers become entangled in the conflict between Owain Gwynedd and his treacherous brother, Cadwaladr, who has allied himself with a Danish mercenary fleet in order to vanquish Owain.

An excellent story. I enjoy the Brother Cadfael books very much. However, you can hear the different cuts in this recording. It changes in volume and quality, usually at the end of a chapter. I also suspect there is the occasional place where a bit is chopped out. I'd really like to hear it re-recorded. I resent spending money for such poor quality.
