Why we think it’s a great listen: Among the great literary achievements of the 20th century, Lolita soars in audio thanks to the incomparable Jeremy Irons, bringing to life Nabokov’s ability to shock and enthrall more than 50 years after publication. Lolita became a cause celebre because of the erotic predilections of its protagonist. But Nabokov's masterpiece owes its stature not to the controversy its material aroused but to its author's use of that material to tell a love story that is shocking in its beauty and tenderness.

I knew the subject matter of course. What I didn't know was that every word in this book was perfectly chosen, and tells a story of desire that left me reeling. I didn't know I could love the character while not approving of his choices or actions. I understand why this book has been listed as one of the 100 best fiction books ever written. If you haven't read it, do.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

A wonderful story of young people caught in the net of the Nazis in WWII. In this book Anthony Doerr shows the tragedy from both inside the Nazi party, and on the life of a blind young French woman. A classic story about doing the right thing, at the risk of your own life. I loved the book.

Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

Let me begin this review by saying I love almost everything Barbara Kingsolver has written. She has a solid place on my bookshelf with both her works of fiction and her wonderful book "Animal Vegetable, Miracle." This story attempts to combine both a fictional setting and characters to educate the reader on the very real threat of global warming. While I agree with the message, I couldn't have disliked the story or characters more. I found them on the whole whiny, and the repetitive dialog mind numbingly boring. Skip this book altogether. Read "Animal Vegetable, Miracle instead.

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

I loved this book! The author takes us back to our childhood's worst fears, and yet shows the beauty of friendship and self sacrifice for another. It reminds me of the feeling I had while reading "Harry Potter," that is; magic is real.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

What did you love best about Outlander?

Without a doubt, Diana Gabaldon's writing will make you feel as though you understand what it is like to have lived in the 18th century. Her characters come to life, and live in your heart. Davina Porter is also amazingly talented as the voice of this story.

What other book might you compare Outlander to and why?

No other series really compares, but I also really liked "The Bronze Horseman" by Paulina Simmons.

What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Davina Porter captures the voices of the characters, is rich with intonation, accents, and is simply beautiful. She is my favorite narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! Hard to put down, but the sheer length makes that impossible surely!

    Any additional comments?

    A must read!
