Don't really care when these stories were written, as long as they are good...and they are. I liked some of the readers better than others but they were all good.

In The Colors of Space, young Bart Steele, Space Academy graduate, is waiting in a spaceport for a ship to take him home when something happens that suddenly thrusts him into the center of a quest for the secret of interstellar travel. The method of faster than light travel, called "warp drive" in later Sci-Fi stories, is a tightly kept secret of alien race known as the "Lhari."

Sometimes I have to wonder if I am listening to the same book after reading a review that pans the narrator. I thought the reading was quite good - as was the book. Very enjoyable.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wilde's only novel, perhaps because he realized that he could never again equal this timeless masterpiece. It is a unique work, both thought-provoking and horrifying. It vacillates between seemingly aimless conversation and riveting narrative in telling the story of a young man's quest for eternal youth and beauty, a quest that ends in scandal and depravity. It has been adapted numerous times for television, film, and the stage.

    Greg says: "Thoroughly rewarding"

This is the best rendition I've heard of one of the best novels ever written. Wonderful!

Five men sat in a railroad compartment on the main train from London to Dover. The same five men boarded the Channel steamer and crossed to Calais, where they caught another train for Paris. By the time the train reaches Paris, we learn that one man is a detective from Scotland Yard, on the trail of stolen gems; one man is a murderer; and another, a corpse!

Good old-fashioned mystery. Loved the narrator.

Very similar in style to Walden, and in fact written while he stayed at Walden Pond, this account chronicles Throeau's 1830 boat trip. In it, he weaves together travel writing, essays on religion, history, and lyrical poetry, as well as his own unique philosophy.

I have trouble understanding why people download a long book and then blast ( often unfairly as in this case ) the narrator. Samples are provided so you know what you are getting. I like to judge for myself so listened to the sample in spite of a review that had such a "blast."
I liked the sound and got the book. Moral of the story...You would not buy a car without taking a test drive. Don't get a book without listening to the sample and trust your own ears.

Andrew North was a pen name of Andre Norton, one of the best and most prolific science fiction writers ot the 20th century. She was the first woman to win the Gandalf Grand Master Award from the World Science Fiction Society in 1977. In this story, a young spaceman is delighted to be invited to a fantastic vacation planet but soon finds himself in the middle of a battle where the weapons resemble a powerful form of Voodoo.

When I was thinking about getting this book there was only one review and it gave some good advice - Listen to the sample. I did that but came to a very different conclusion. I thought the reading was fine. Got the book and, after hearing the first few chapters I am very happy with both book and reader.
So...follow the "Listen to the sample" advice but decide for yourself. Opinions about narrators I've noticed yet again, can be widely divergent.

This science-fiction classic is the story of a Professor, his nephew, and their quest for the secrets contained at the earth's core. Led by Hans, their Icelandic guide, the two explore the mysteries of a never-before-seen subterranean world.

My students chose this version after hearing samples from all of them. ( I play parts of novels as we cover them in class. ) I was concerned that it was not quite digital quality since it was produced back in 1980. They didn't care. The voice sounded like a young man. It fit the book. The others were obviously much older. I must say that, after hearing a few chapters, I think they made the right choice. Very effective reading.

Joseph Conrad was a native of Poland, yet many critics regard him as one of the greatest English novelists. This is all the more remarkable, since he did not learn to speak English fluently until he was in his 20s. He became a naturalized British citizen in 1886. He wrote many books and stories, but the two that remain most popluar are Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim. Lord Jim is both an adventure story and a story of tragedy and repentence.

By "raw" I mean that this recording does not sound quite as polished as more recent versions. But it has a very authentic intensity in the reading that I thought was missing in the others I tried. Very easy to get caught up in this one.

This is the complete text of The Art of War, one of the oldest and most successful books on military strategy in the world. It has also been applied to business and managerial strategies. The tranaslaton, by Lionel Giles is considered one of the best available. This unabridged editon of The Art of War includes only the most essential translator's notes so that the words and thoughts of Sun Tzu may be easily understood.

Written before Alexander the Great was born, this Chinese treatise on war has become one of the most influential works on the subject. Read widely in the east since its appearance 2,500 years ago, The Art of War first came to the west with a French Jesuit in 1782. It has been studied by generals from Napoleon to Rommel, and it is still required reading in most military academies of the world.

Michael says: "Just your basic Art of War translation"
    "Easy to understand"
    Overall

With most of the commentaries taken out, the actual words of the author are much easier to understand.
Many powerful lessons - for business, not just war.
