Not what was expected, but one of the most fun mysteries I've ever encountered. This writer can meander around a little, but then right in the middle of it all are these sly little zings. You have to have the right sense of humor to get this writer, but the wit is outstanding. If a person needs a protagonist with a lot of drama in their personal life and gory crime scene descriptions to be happy, this book is decidedly not for them. It also helped to have read another of this author's books beforehand as there are a few surreal moments in this one. This is probably the best one of those already recorded, and I do hope they make more. I gave it a 5 because for those of us who really enjoy Innes' dry sense of humor it is a gem!
It was fun! Oh, and I liked the ending!! I was yelling at the characters as to who the culprit was way sooner than they had caught on, but the resolution caught me by surprise. Usually the murderer just kills himself. Sorry if that gives too much away.
She is like a modern day Patricia Wentworth with a much younger sleuth. Miss Silver never had any romance herself.
I intend to persue this series, and she reads several, so yes.
It is the most relaxing audiobook I've heard in a while. I go to sleep to them, and A) I went back and actually listened to all of it the next day. B). It didn't wake me up in the middle of the night with something truly disturbing going on.
So, it engaged and intrigued me, and I'm so jaded that isn't common.
No excessive gore, no creepy thoughts from the murderer, characters aren't so multi-dimensional you feel like you're in the real world. I was in the mood for brain candy. This was it!
Like I said: pure escapism! Dialogue and characterization are all there. The unlikeable characters might have been a little too unlikeable, but it was perfect otherwise.
No. People seem to react negatively to her on other reviews, but it wasn't distracting. I've heard worse on audible.
I relaxed!!! That was priceless. Thank you!
Seriously! You can hear this poor soul practically choking at times, and he rereads fragments of text way too often. I really liked the short stories, but it was like having Uncle Abraham read to you without his teeth in!! They didn't even have the production integrity to re-record and edit. The book itself was good, or I would have rated it a 2.
I use audiobooks to lull myself to sleep, so this was great for me! That fact probably isn't a high recommendation to those who want excitement in a book, however.
After many great nights of sleep, I reached the ending and thought it was very sly. I actually listened to the beginning again, just because the murder itself was so unexpected......and slept really well again!
