I was so excited to read this after reading the first in the series, "Creep", but I was a little disappointed. It seems like this book doesn't have as much of the complexity of the first, and the character development (which I really enjoyed in Creep) is a little lacking and bordering on cookie-cutter. I don't regret listening to this book, and if I hadn't already been blown away by the first book in this series, I may have enjoyed it more as a stand alone novel. My expectations were higher. The actual story line of this book seems like a continuation of the last book, which might be fine if done well, but it just feels tedious after a while. I also guessed the ending correctly, and I hate when I get it right! I love an author who can keep me guessing. Though this sounds like a bad review, I want to point out that this book was likely disappointing for me because I had high expectations after the first one. However, it is a decent story, and I'd say worth the credit. The narration was done well, except for one guy with a gruff voice who was made to sound incredibly annoying. But, I understand why the narrator had to do it that way.
The story was fine, but this narrator is so hard to listen to. I've listened to a lot of books narrated by this reader, and I like her voice and range, but the constant swallowing or whatever noise she keeps making that sounds like swishing spit around is extremely distracting!
I love this series and will definitely explore this author's other work. The main characters are developed well, and I think these books could be read alone without missing previous insight from the novels before it. I also like how the characters are not the stereotypical perfect or bad but just misunderstood, etc. - their issues and reactions just seem a little more "real human".
My only thought about this particular story is that there are so many characters and names, it was really hard for me to remember, "who's that", or "what did this one do?" I found myself rewinding and trying to go back and find the connections. I think the story could have been just as good without throwing so many people in the mix, but I also think that this issue would make this a better read than a listen.
Having said all that, I am hooked, and can't wait for more!
Think I found a new author to obsess over. This is a good (unrealistic, but isn't that why we want fiction?) mystery that is not the cookie cutter bad guy vs. good guy story that all wraps up just perfectly in the end. I loved the character development, but it was not overdone so as to detract from the story line. I guessed the end and was right, but I won't hold that against the author! Definitely worth the credit & "read".
The story was engaging and characters pretty well developed, but I found it to be just overly dramatic and morose. At times, I found myself rolling my eyes and wishing the author would just move on, and felt like her point was being hammered over my head. I think the book should be about half as long as it is.
By the end of this book, I didn't care if everyone in the story died, just so that the story was over! Don't expect any huge twist or surprises, and good luck making it through if you decide to try it.
I found myself not only sitting in parking lots to hear more, but actually talking alound to the characters! I hate the cookie cutter mystery stories where you can guess the ending by the second chapter (or not even care) - this is not one of them. I was very pleasantly surprised and am now hooked on a new author. So far, this one is the best...
