The book is a good, satisfying, typical Mosely story. But the narrator is just fantastic. He is the first male narrator who isn't afraid to give his female characters individuality and depth instead of speaking in a silly falsetto. Don Cheadle must be a really good actor. All the characters are completely drawn through Mosely's clever details, and Cheadle's virtuoso performance. Very entertaining and somewhat thought provoking.
Try it, you'll like it.
What a beautiful, enjoyable book! Long as it was, I was sorry when it ended, though I hardly got a thing done while I was so engrossed with this story. Wonderful characters, great dialogue, A totally life-affirming story. I was afraid it would be too politically correct, or else kind of dumb and hateful. It's neither. It's a really smart, often hilarioius exploration of identity. Readers who remember the 60's and 70's will especially find Eugenides' take on the politics and fashions of the time interesting. Also people from Detroit! I can't imagine an American of any political stripe who wouldn't like reading this. Kind of like Great Expectations meets Confederacy of Dunces.
Though not a regular fantasy reader, I found this book very enjoyable. The narrator was a big part of the pleasure-he gave the characters clearly defined personalities and voices without being too corny about it. The plot is engaging, and the writing is quite good. Eragon, the Dragon, and the other principal characters are well-drawn and complex. I will certainly buy the next book in the series when it comes out.
This book was so gorgeous--great use of language, compelling plot, vivid characters---I couldn't get anything done 'til it was over!
One of the most affecting books I've read. I've never been that fascinated by things Irish (including my ancestors), but after reading this, I felt I had to go see Ireland for myself.
I found this book completely compelling and Swoozie Kurtz did a great job narrating it. Although there was much I didn't agree with in the author's approach to raising dogs, the book was very informative and entertaining. I certainly saw my dogs in a whole new light!
