Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

What did you love best about The Handmaid's Tale?

This was a fabulous distopian novel, the only issue is that you definitely have to suspend you disbelieve for parts that are hard to believe could actually happen. Great social commentary.

What other book might you compare The Handmaid's Tale to and why?

    1984

Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. Oscar dreams of becoming the Dominican J. R. R. Tolkien and, most of all, of finding love. But he may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fuku: the curse that has haunted Oscar's family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still waiting for his first kiss, is just its most recent victim.

What did you like best about The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao? What did you like least?

The book was pretty good and possibly even worth reading, but not nearly as good as I had expected based on reviews.

I have listened to many audiobooks before and never had any issues, but for whatever reason this auidiobook was almost impossible to listen to. No matter how many times I tried to play it over, it would constantly skip and jump to different scenes, and there where many times when the narrators voice was playing over itself, saying many things at once. I would NOT recommend purchasing this, just read the book.

  • Memory Mambo: A Novel

Memory Mambo describes the life of Juani Casas, a 25-year-old Cuban-born American lesbian who manages her family's laundromat in Chicago while trying to cope with family, work, love, sex, and the weirdness of North American culture. Achy Obejas's writing is sharp and mordantly funny. She understands perfectly how the romance of exile - from a homeland as well as from heterosexuality - and the mundane reality of everyday life balance each other.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

This book on tape sounded as if it was being read to me by Siri. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't actually read by a human at all. The inflections were all wrong and the timing and rhythm of her voice sounded strange to the degree that it was difficult to pay attention to what she was saying.

    Great book. Terrible narrator.
