The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

This grueling battle saw 10 million tons of Japanese shipping sunk by U.S. submarines, but the cost to the U.S. Navy was one in five of its boats, the highest casualty rate of the U.S. armed services.

In the book that he was born to write, provocateur and best-selling author Christopher Hitchens inspires future generations of radicals, gadflies, mavericks, rebels, angry young (wo)men, and dissidents. Who better to speak to that person who finds him or herself in a contrarian position than Hitchens, who has made a career of disagreeing in profound and entertaining ways.

Richard Mayhew is an unassuming young businessman living in London, with a dull job and a pretty but shrewish fiancée. Then one night he stumbles upon a girl lying on the sidewalk, bleeding. He stops to help her, and his life is changed forever. Soon he finds himself living in a London most people would never have dreamed of: a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels. It is a world that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations.

What would have made Neverwhere better?

Not sure. I just noticed when I was listening that my mind wandered off. To be fair, fantasy is not my preferred genre. It was well read by the narrator however.

Would you recommend Neverwhere to your friends? Why or why not?

No. My friends prefer history and historical novels.

What does Neil Gaiman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Good reader with plenty of enthusiasm and a talent for adapting various voices of the characters.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I didnt finish it. So the answer is no.

    Any additional comments?

For someone who is a fantasy lover this book maybe ideal for them.
