I enjoy audio books. One of my favorites "My Life In France" allows me to open any section anytime to become immersed in the joie de vivre!

The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater. The last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, it devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The story was not what I had expected so I was a little disappointed. If does however give quite an accounting of the last days before the fall of Germany. It is collection of facts and accounts made into a long story. You do walk away with a much better idea of war and price paid by everyone.

“If anyone knows how to be a pastor in the contemporary context that person is Eugene Peterson. Eugene possesses the rare combination of a pastor’s heart and a pastor’s art. Take and read!” (Richard J. Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline) “I’ve been nagging Eugene Peterson for years to write a memoir. In our clamorous, celebrity-driven, entertainment culture, his life and words convey a quiet whisper of sanity, authenticity, and, yes, holiness.” (Philip Yancey, author of What Good is God)

What made the experience of listening to The Pastor the most enjoyable?

Interesting to hear the pastor's perspective. In one of his pastoral books he mentioned hearing people come to thinking they had committed the most horrible of acts, when in reality we are not very imaginative and there are only about a dozen acts that pastors hear over and over.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Eugene Peterson

Which character – as performed by Arthur Morey – was your favorite?

    Eugene Peterson

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, I was hoping the book would include more of his personal life and challenges. This book stays focused on his career.

    Any additional comments?

Eugene Peterson is a favorite of mine. Anything he writes will have intention and incite.

For 15 years, Eleanor Roosevelt and her handsome doctor, David Gurewitsch, were friends, traveling, entertaining, and eventually buying a townhouse together in Manhattan. Their friendship has always intrigued historians, but not much is known about it. David kept detailed journals and took thousands of photos, but he never publicly discussed their time together.

If you could sum up Kindred Souls in three words, what would they be?

    Sweet, Happy, Ending

What other book might you compare Kindred Souls to and why?

Dearie, because they both carved out lives for themselves. Especially at a time when most women faded into darkness after their marriages. Both of these women went on to find fulfilling lives. I am very impressed by people who cultivate love and purpose in their lives.

What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?

I think she did a fine job and enjoyed listening to her. It does make a difference to have a voice that resonates with the listener and the subject.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    A Life Lived Well.

  • Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child

From Pasadena to Cambridge to New York, Washington, D.C., India, Ceylon, Paris, Marseilles, Santa Barbara, and Maine, Bob Spitz re-creates an extraordinary life. He takes us beyond the image of Julia as the tall, eccentric woman with a funny voice who taught America how to cook, to establish her as a genuine rebel and beloved icon, a woman who redefined herself in middle age, helped to change the role of women in America, set the standard for how to create a public personality in the modern media world.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

She reminds me very much of my aunt. Both were unusually tall for their time and both forged their own successful paths through a man's world. I think "My Life in France" is much more personal and enjoyable but this filled in a lot of spaces.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoy and relate to her joie de vivre. Sometimes we just plod into life head on without a lot of reasoning. Julia's positive outlook on life is very enviable.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Not so much a scene as how she fashioned a new life for herself, especially when Paul started to "slip off the raft". I can only hope to be as involved and active into my 90's.

    Any additional comments?

If you want to know her life story this is the book but if you want to know her read "My Life in France".

In Washington: A Life celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation. This crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

What did you love best about Washington: A Life?

George Washington would be a man I would look up to. He was honest and you could trust him. That was reassuring as some others like Jefferson were such a disappointment. I started this book on a search to see who the political powers that have shaped us really were. George passed and I can see how he became such an Icon in our history.
