"Jack, it's eating me" So states the wife of Jack, the main character, when she is inhabited by a swarm of nanotech molecules who slowly take control of her mind and body. If you think this is some dialog from a cheesy science fiction from the 50's you would be wrong. It's from Michael Crichton's new novel "Prey".
Perhaps Crichton's reputation gets his works on the best seller lists. That, or American literary tastes have descended to new lows. "Prey" is a tedious waste of time.
A boring story line with amateur dialog about nanotech molecules attacking some Silicon Valley "scientists". Characters who are simply unbelieveable. After witnessing their fellow employees being butchered to death they calmly discusss the merits of frozen foods over dinner. And the "F" word is constantly over used and repeated ad nauseum by some of the characters. An occassional damn or sh*t would have been a relief.
Don't waste your time and money on this dog. I had to force myself to listen to the second half of it just to see how ludicrous he would get.
Crichton's main character aptly sums up this story......."It was so dumb it was breathtaking".
I only continued to listen to this disjointed series of anecdotes because they were well stated - and the narrator is superb. Vidal is a good essayist but superb novelist he is not. Taken as a whole this work amounts to a confusing collection of gossip columns about the wartime White House.
The book is typical of Vidal's self-promotion. He includes himself in the story to continue the myth that he was somehow well connected and to the manor born. In fact, born the son of a low paid military instructor at West Point, his only connection to old money and White House politics was his divorced mother's second marriage to Hugh Auchincloss, who was later the stepfather of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Always the self promoter, Vidal has milked this connection for all its worth. This book reflects that spirit. For example, the author would have you believe that his knowledge of the intimate habits of FDR (such as how he mixes his cocktails)come from Vidal's first hand experience in the day-to-day activity in the wartime White House. All of it is pure fabrication. During the war period, Vidal had no connection with politics and was a lowly enlisted man in a isolated post in Alaska. But his books always try to give the appearance that he is depicting first hand knowledge.
And much like an early version of the aged rock star Madonna, Vidal throws in irrelevant comments to shock his readers such as the inane reference to his housekeeper's vibrator.
Once you finish this book you are left asking yourself why you wasted so many hours listening to manufactured gossip about mid-century American political figures.
This is an incredible waste of time. I gave up after getting halfway through the thing as it got no where.
I listened to this book for hours anticipating a earth shattering revelation from no less than the mother of God herself only to learn to my great shock that the Virgin Mary supports gay marriage and abortion rights. What a dismal let down to what could have been a decent read notwithstanding it's constant Catholic bashing.
This book has to be the longest, most cliche ridden piece of propaganda about the evil, diabolical Germans, Austrians, and Swiss (whites and Christian); and the wonderful, always heroic, brave and ever-so-honest Jews. I wasted lot of time on a very long piece of propaganda which seemed to have been written in 1944 by some hack pulp fiction writer.
To hear Carter pontificate about moral values is irritating to the extreme. Here we have a lecture from the very man who brought us the Islamic revolution and betrayed the Shah of Iran -- who was a firm ally of America. This is the man who enabled the creation of the fundamentalist Islamic state which is now bent on America's destruction. Carter displays a complete lack of common sense as he criticizes a sitting American president both publicly and in his untimely book. This man is a menace to every American. If Carter was still president we would all be praising Allah.
Finally an honest report about Clinton's Reign of Terror. Freeh goes the extra mile to show how Clinton used and abused his power and the system to further his personal ambitions at the expense of America. Every voter should read just how the Clinton's manipulated racial and economic groups to remain in power. Freeh also reveals how Clinton engaged in the worst crimes against Americans from the slaugher in Wacho to the appointment of leftist extremists to the Supreme Court. The work also shows how both Clintons presented a false and dishonest face to the general public while mired in domestic strife over Bill's sexual misconduct. Hopefully this book will go a long way to help avoid the same mistake again in 2008. Hurrah for Mr. Freeh - a man of integrity and guts who fought for each and every American.
If you enjoy your news with a heavy dose of political correctness this is the program for you. Ms. Mullins is biased in favor of women, minorities and any country but America. But this is the reason I am finding an alternative to Audible reads. Too many of the programs like "The World" think they have the definitive answers and must inflict their leftist spin on everyone.
After listening to this I certainly saw why it was given a prominent place in all the liberal media and promoted endlessly.
Such a masterpiece of Catholic bashing that I am sure the anti-Christian left were in seventh heaven promoting this nonsense. And the author was so obvious in his ploy to convince the public this slop was factual. What a laugh. What does this guy have against the Catholic Church? Or is just the 30 pieces of silver he is after?
I really have to contrast this book and the reaction to it with Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ".
Who did we hear complaining like a stuck pig in that case? And the film didn't even come close to this slanderous fiction.
I have to give this book one star for literature and four stars for religious bigotry and intolerance. And remember --- the sword of bigotry cuts both ways.
