  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs)
    • By Laura Hillenbrand
    • Narrated By Edward Herrmann
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

    Janice says: "Indescribable"
    "Can't stop listening"

I am about half way through and I can't stop listening - this is a great book!

  • Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 45 mins)
    • By Richard Wrangham
    • Narrated By Kevin Pariseau
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Ever since Darwin and The Descent of Man, the existence of humans has been attributed to our intelligence and adaptability. But in Catching Fire, renowned primatologist Richard Wrangham presents a startling alternative: our evolutionary success is the result of cooking. In a groundbreaking theory of our origins, Wrangham shows that the shift from raw to cooked foods was the key factor in human evolution.

KHarrang says: "Fascinating book about early human development..."
"Interesting book - but a little long"

This was an interesting book - but a little long and repetitive... bottom-line is women cook and we all gain weight.

  • Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Condoleezza Rice
    • Narrated By Condoleezza Rice

This is the story of Condoleezza Rice that has never been told, not that of an ultra-accomplished world leader, but of a little girl - and a young woman - trying to find her place in a sometimes hostile world, and of two exceptional parents, and an extended family and community, that made all the difference.

Balakrishna says: "March without a march"
    "A truly amazing family."

A truly amazing parents. Very interesting to hear of her experiences growing up as a young black girl in the south.

  • Desperate Passage: The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Ethan Rarick
    • Narrated By Christopher Prince
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In late October 1846, the last wagon train of that year's westward migration stopped overnight before resuming its arduous climb over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, unaware that a fearsome storm was gathering force. After months of grueling travel, the 81 men, women and children would be trapped for a brutal winter with little food and only primitive shelter. The conclusion is known: by spring of the next year, the Donner Party was synonymous with the most harrowing extremes of human survival.

Roger says: "I REALLY enjoyed this book"
    "I REALLY enjoyed this book"

I REALLY enjoyed this book. I have listened to it twice in the last three weeks - and don't want it to end. The book is narrated by Christopher Prince, who makes the book enjoyable listening.

  • Juliette Low: Girl Scout Founder

    • UNABRIDGED (2 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Helen Boyd Higgins
    • Narrated By Lynn Taccogna
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Share the childhood adventures of the young girl from Savannah, Georgia, who would grow up to found the Girl Scouts. "Daisy" Gordon would rather climb a tree and ride a horse than learn to dance and sew. "There's not one thing I can't do that boys can," said Daisy, and the organization she created years later proved her words.

    Roger says: "Irritating"

Irritating book, kids hated it and we did not finish.

  • Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Jon Krakauer
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

The best-selling author of Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, and Under the Banner of Heaven delivers a stunning, eloquent account of a remarkable young man's haunting journey. Like the men whose epic stories Jon Krakauer has told in his previous bestsellers, Pat Tillman was an irrepressible individualist and iconoclast. In May 2002, Tillman walked away from his $3.6 million NFL contract to enlist in the United States Army.

Daniel says: "Good book, painful narration"
    "Didn't finish book"

I had trouble getting into this book... and didn't finish.

I have listened to several of John Krakauer and loved them... but not this book.

  • God's Smuggler

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Brother Andrew
    • Narrated By Simon Vance
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

This best seller tells of the young Dutch factory worker's incredible efforts to transport Bibles across closed borders - and the miraculous ways in which God provided for him every step of the way. Brother Andrew's story remains as inspiring today as it was 35 years ago, and with this new release, it will motivate a whole new generation to risk everything to follow God's call.

Joshua says: "A True Inspiration... Must-Read Classic!"
"Enjoyed book again - 25 years later."

I read this book over 25 years ago and had forgotten how good it was. Great reminder of how life was behind the iron curtain.

  • The Great Escape

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Paul Brickhill
    • Narrated By Robert Whitfield

It was a split-second operation as delicate and as deadly as a time bomb. It demanded the concentrated devotion and vigilance of more than six hundred men for every hour, every day, and every night for more than a year. With only their bare hands and crude homemade tools, they sank shafts, built underground railroads, forged passports, drew maps, faked weapons, and tailored German clothes.

says: "One of the most incredible stories of all time"
    "Much better than the movie!"

It's amazing how resourceful the prisoners were in such a difficult and challenging situation - becoming a game of us against the Nazi. I have listened this book three times and have enjoyed it every time. Much better than the movie.

  • Unveiled: A Lineage of Grace, Book I

    • ABRIDGED (2 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Francine Rivers
    • Narrated By Anita Lustrea

Unveiled, the first book in the Grace of Lineage series, brings Tamar, daughter-in-law of Judah, to life. Even though she was sinned against and sinned herself, using her wits to trick Judah into sleeping with her, God chose to use her shame to bless her and to show grace and forgiveness to all! Tamar was the mother of Perez, and among his descendants was Boaz, the great-grandfather of King David.

    Roger says: "Great Book"
    "Great Book"

This book gives you a sense of what life was really like back in the old testament. Tells the story of Joseph's (the guy with the coat of many colors) older brother and his family. My kids (ages 9 & 14)loved it and have listened to it several times.
