After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I wouldnt turn them away from it, but I dont think I would encourage anyone to read it.

What about Robert Glenister’s performance did you like?

The various character voices were excellent!

    Any additional comments?

I had high hopes for the book and can say I enjoyed the twists and turns. However, the story seemed to drag a bit from time to time.

Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre. But nothing he possesses is as unlikely or as dreadful as his latest discovery, a thing so terrible-strange, Jude can't help but reach for his wallet. For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man's suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost. It's the real thing.

What would have made Heart-Shaped Box better?

Removing the horrible, jarring music that came between some chapters/parts of the story. Why did the last 10 or so 'chapters' have to consist of one or two sentences??? Just end the story... why drag it on??

Which character – as performed by Stephen Lang – was your favorite?

    the ghost

    Any additional comments?

The story had potential. I was intrigued by the manner in which it began with the heart shaped box, but I think after a time, the story became chaotic. I would not recommend it to someone else.

Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense pro who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, to defend clients at the bottom of the legal food chain. It's no wonder that he is despised by cops, prosecutors, and even some of his own clients. But an investigator is murdered for getting too close to the truth and Haller quickly discovers that his search for innocence has taken him face to face with a kind of evil as pure as a flame.

What did you love best about The Lincoln Lawyer?

I loved that it surprised me. I thought it would be a good listen, but didnt expect the twists and turns of the story that kept me sitting in the car wanting to finish a chapter before I went in the house.

his most powerful and intricately-plotted novel yet. Thirteen year-old Johnny Merrimon had the perfect life: happy parents and a twin sister that meant the world to him. But Alyssa went missing a year ago, stolen off the side of a lonely street with only one witness to the crime. His family shattered, his sister presumed dead, Johnny risks everything to explore the dark side of his hometown in a last, desperate search.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    I dont know

Has The Last Child turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I thought the narration was poor. It was very annoying when the narrator, for no apparent reason, pronounced 'the' as 'thee' almost every time and the word 'a' with a long A sound. For what reason? It sounded like an almost illiterate person was reading the story!

What character would you cut from The Last Child?

I would cut the lisp from the coroner.

    Any additional comments?

Along with the narration, the story was unnecessarily dragged out. Things were repeated over and over to prolong the story, but for what reason???

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

    Patrick says: "compelling father-daughter story"
    "Disappointed"
    Overall

I felt there was not much 'meat' to the story. An indulgent, spoiled and headstrong young woman and a mother and father who seem to stick their heads in the sand at every opportunity. The biggest revelation for me in this book was how some things going on early in the Nazi regime remind me of American politics today. The blatant actions and words of the Nazis early on were pooh-poohed by observers and denied after the fact by the German leaders who successfully whipped up a frenzied loyalty in many of their countrymen. Those Germans who didn't agree were afraid to speak up in fear of their life. No where near as good as Devil in the White City.

At the old family manse in Louisiana, Special Agent Pendergast is putting to rest long-ignored possessions reminiscent of his wife Helen's tragic death, only to make a stunning - and dreadful - discovery. Helen had been mauled by an unusually large and vicious lion while they were big game hunting in Africa. But now, Pendergast learns that her rifle-her only protection from the beast-had been deliberately loaded with blanks. Who could have wanted Helen dead...and why?

    Snoodely says: "Intelligent, spooky thriller"

One of my favorite Agent Pendergast books! I took it everywhere with me! The passages where the agent and a friend were being chased through the swamp really had my heart racing. Great Job on this one and LOVED the narration.

  • The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution

The Greatest Show on Earth is a stunning counterattack on advocates of "Intelligent Design," explaining the evidence for evolution while exposing the absurdities of the creationist "argument". Dawkins sifts through rich layers of scientific evidence: from living examples of natural selection to clues in the fossil record; from natural clocks that mark the vast epochs wherein evolution ran its course to the intricacies of developing embryos; from plate tectonics to molecular genetics.

Joseph says: "Well read, well explained, scientific."
    "Fabulous read; easy to understand."
    Overall

This one is a winner! I have read several of Dawkins' books before, but listening to his voice (and the other reader, too) really helped me understand the ideas and examples he presented. We have done a poor job educating our student population on Evolution. This book explains everything in such simple and understandable detail! A must read for an educated person!

From mega-selling author Jodi Picoult comes an engrossing tale of medical morality and parental responsibility. Charlotte O'Keefe's daughter is born with osteogenesis imperfecta and will endure endless broken bones. Facing unthinkable medical costs, Charlotte considers a troubling solution. If she goes to court and says she would have terminated the pregnancy had she known of her daughter's condition, she might get enough money for a lifetime of medical expenses.

This author follows a formula of allowing the reader to see an issue from many sides, many points of view. As a biology teacher I like this because it gives my students perspective on how reproductive technologies add a whole new and heart wrentching dimension to being a parent. Much like "My sisters Keeper" in this respect.

The ship sinks, and 16-year-old Pi finds himself alone on a lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra with a broken leg, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon it's just Pi, the tiger, and the vast Pacific Ocean - for 227 days. Pi's fear, knowledge, and cunning keep him alive until they reach the coast of Mexico, where the tiger disappears into the jungle.

    "Life of Pi"
    Overall

After listening to this book on a very long drive, I had to come home and find out if it was really fiction! Throughout the story I became more convinced that this was a tale of survival that had really happened. I enjoyed the subtle humor, the rich stories of Pi's childhood, the descriptions of food. I cried thinking of his pain and cheered for his fortitude and courage. An amazing book!
