i realize i am in the minority here, but i would not give this book 5 stars. the first 3/4 of the book was very good ... insightful, sweet and paced just right. i can't say the same for the last part. i wouldn't characterize mr. fry's walk as a spiritual journey, as some seem to ... i'd say more an education in human nature and self awareness. the narration is excellent.
The narration of this book is excellent. First time through, I did not really engage in the story. Decided to give it a second try and liked it. If your mind tends to wander, though, this might not be the listen for you.
I read this book sometime back on kindle. Thought I'd listen to it on audio now that it has been made into a movie. Honestly, I think it's a better read in print, since the listen felt a bit abbreviated. Good narration. I would recommend as it is an unusual story in an unusual setting.
I liked everything about this book .... I particularly appreciated the pacing. It's so common to become involved in a book, only to have the plot end abruptly tying up all those annoying loose ends. I liked how this story unfolded, and ended. Modern and a bit eccentric story. 4 stars.
This book was a standout read/listen. Narration excellent. My only issue was that the story transitioned rather abruptly from scene to scene. Recommended.
I found this book to be something of a mixed bag. There were some sweet moments, and the cultural backdrop was interesting, but overall lacks the element of surprise. An average read.
This author is obviously an authority in her field, and her method is right on the money. I would, however, recommend purchasing this book either on kindle or hardcover instead of audio. A third of the book is likely only to be scanned (since only a few minutes actually apply to any one individual), and there were several times that I would have liked to go back to an earlier section but was unable to do so due to the audio format. Also, there are very few authors who should be narrating their own books ... this is not one of them. The narration was average, and to do justice to the book should have been done by a professional narrator, in my opinion.
This book was an interesting enough read, but it was lacking in depth or continuity. It has the feeling of a novel in installments. Okay to pass the time,
I found this book to be engaging enough, but easily forgettable. An average read. 3 stars.
Lisa See is, as always, an excellent storyteller. This book is well written and well paced. Chinese literature is rarely uplifting, and this book is no exception. That being said, the story is about an important time in U.S.history, and worth a listen.
The Goldfinch is an odd book .... At times very engaging, at others not so much. The subject is not so much the art world as how young person(s) are affected by profound loss. The narration is excellent.
