A nine-year-old boy is found murdered at the bottom of a well near a popular beach resort in southern Italy. In what looks like a hopeless case for Guido Guerrieri, a Senegalese peddler is accused of the crime. Faced with small-town racism, Guido attempts to exploit the esoteric workings of the Italian courts. The voice of Sean Barrett brings this gritty Italian detective series to life.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, again, I purchased this book as a daily special and was so please that I was introduced to a good story and a good character. He had didn't exactly have personality but he was real.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

not on the edge of my seat but certainly kept me interested

    Which scene was your favorite?

can't say now - doing the review a little late - have read several other books but I found the book real so must be the scene where he is satisfied with himself

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no - but none are. don't have time to do thatbut I listen to long stretches of time, driving or doing mindless work etc.

    Any additional comments?

thought the accent would bother me but it didn't, it actually made it better, I think

Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumor, and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He’s had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.

It happens quietly one August morning. As dawn's shimmering light drenches the humid Iowa air, two families awaken to find their little girls have gone missing in the night. Now these families are tied by the question of what happened to their children. And the answer is trapped in the silence of unspoken family secrets.

Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, first serialized in a magazine in 1930, is best known through the iconic Humphrey Bogart film of 1941. But it was the book that created the classic "noir" genre with its tough private detective threading his cool way between the criminals and the law. Sam Spade, the private eye solving the mystery of the Maltese statuette, was the template for Philip Marlowe and a host of others…. but they come no more shrewd and cunning with Hammett peppering the text with one-liners.

    Kathi says: "Outstanding American classic!"

What did you love best about The Maltese Falcon?

    The attitude
    a true detective story
don't write them like this anymore - too bad

What other book might you compare The Maltese Falcon to and why?

    Philip Marlowe
Pictured the same type of fellow
You just liked them, the attitude, the follow through, the way you really would solve a mystery

What about Eric Meyers’s performance did you like?

    Just the right voice

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    the newspaper clue
    it made sense

    Any additional comments?

I really, really enjoyed the book
