  • Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Al Franken
    • Narrated By Al Franken
    Overall

    Story
    (313)

Finding logical inconsistencies, factual errors, and doublespeak wherever he looks, Al Franken takes on and destroys the myth of liberal bias in the media, hoists the Bush White House on its own rhetorical petard, and punctures the mean-spirited sanctimony of such media darlings as Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly. Timely, provocative, unfailingly honest, and always uproarious, Lies is sure to raise hackles and spark hilarity inside the Beltway and from sea to shining sea.

Peter says: "Franken's One Sided View"
"So good I bought the book!"
    Overall

With 14 Harvard researchers to back him up, Al Franken exposes the shoddy tactics of "right wing" writers, commentators and politicians. You're not likely to see an expose on this book, because there's nothing to expose -- Franken is meticulous in documenting every claim. There is a great comic book segment on "The Gospel of Supply Side Jesus" which prompted me to buy the hardbound book, as well. This one is a keeper.

An enigmatic young woman. A manipulative sister. Their brilliant father. An unexpected suitor. One life-altering question. The search for the truth behind a mysterious mathematical proof is the perplexing problem in David Auburn's dynamic play. Starring Anne Heche and Jeremy Sisto, Proof is a winner of the 2001 Tony award for Best Play as well as the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

"Excellent adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize play"
    Overall

I had the good fortune to see Anne Heche twice in the Broadway production of PROOF and was delighted to see that her excellent performance has been preserved on audio (Gwyneth Paltrow was picked for the movie version before anyone knew how good Heche would be). The supporting performances are equally satisfying in this intelligent, compelling and, dare I say it, moving play. More than most plays, this one works beautifully in the audio medium.

  • The Kid Stays in the Picture

Success. Scandal. Sex. Tragedy. Infamy. The Kid Stays in the Picture is the can't-make-this-stuff-up true story of Robert Evans, Hollywood giant and legendary bad boy. A new film version of Evan's story, based on this autobiography, hits theaters July 26. Fun fact: It's rumored that Evans' narration on this book was the inspiration for Dustin Hoffman's distinct speaking style in the film Wag the Dog.

Kim Meseck says: "The Kid Stays in the Picture"
"Engrossing look at a Hollywood producer"
    Overall

No one thinks higher of Robert Evans than Robert Evans, but his story is fascinating and he probably is directly responsible for more great movies during the 1970s than any other studio head. Excerpts from this recording were used to narrate the excellent documentary of the same name; hear the complete work here. It's a fascinating look at the wheeling and dealing that goes on behind the scenes at a major motion picture studio, and Evans' personal life is one heck of a roller coaster ride, as well.

    "A must for dinosaur admirers!"
    Overall

Conan Doyle's portrait of a mysterious plateau where dinosaurs and "cave men" co-exist in isolation from the modern world is brought to life by a talented reader. Every character is clearly differentiated by a different vocal quality or accent and the narrator's description of the dinosaurs make it easy to picture them. I had skipped over this classic novel for years and I'm glad I finally caught up with it. Recommended.

  • When You Ride Alone You Ride with bin Laden: What the Government Should Be Telling Us to Help Fight the War on Terrorism

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs)

    • Narrated By Bill Maher
    Overall

    Performance
    (44)
    Story

Political provocateur Bill Maher tells it like it is in a useful and hilarious guide for the many Americans who want to do more here at home to help in the war effort, but are at a loss as to how. Says Maher, "Traveling the country, I find that people want to do more here at home, but are at a loss as to what. Even when the government issues a Terrorism Advisory, it's maddeningly vague - 'Terrorist alert today! Code Burnt Orange!' 'And what?' I always want to ask, "Bring a sweater?'"

chris says: "Witty and accurate, mostly, but outdated"
    "A guidebook for patriotic Americans"
    Overall

Bill Maher addresses the subject of "real" patriotism in this brief but engaging expose of Junior Bush's failure to rally American's together following 9-11. There's plenty of humor, of course, but Maher has a very serious message to impart, as well, as he covers such topics as oil consumption, diamond traders and drug wars. You may want to run out and buy the book after listening to the audio portion of this colorful picture book.

In this memoir spanning five decades of Broadway, Hollywood and television history, Carl Reiner recalls his life in show business. He take us back to his first sweaty audition, his forays into the theater, his work on The Dick Van Dyke Show, his long friendship and collaboration with Mel Brooks and much more.

"A comic mastermind with many stories to tell"
    Overall

Carl Reiner has one of the great comic minds of the 20th Century and he's laying claim to the 21st, as well. This isn't a book of jokes, but a witty and fascinating peek at the highlights of a wonderful career and life. Some of the topics include Call Me Mister, Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks & the 2000 Year Old Man, The Dick Van Dyke Show, It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Steve Martin and much more. Anyone interested in humor over the past 60 years will find much to savor.
