If you liked Imager, you'll like this and whilst I am waiting on the 8th Imager book, I will continue with this series. Just as good and just as compelling, in a quiet sophisticated style rather than grandiose and pretentious. Great character and development, excellent story, good basis for Magic Chaos and Order.
As alluded in the headline, the narrators 'sound effects' really work against the story telling. If they want 'Sound Effects' do REAL Sound Effects. At times, especially in one of the final scenes the amount of irritating 'sound effect' really almost spoilt the final chapters.
Yet...... I am purchasing books 2 and 3 right after this review is posted!!
Although I am disappointed with the new style of very brusque endings with almost no Epilogue, his ability to tell a compelling story and continue the adventures of our Scholar, Imager, Sub Commander is brilliant.
Not so much an exiting story style as compelling and involved. I hope his next book is out soon!!
Even after 5 books in the series, I read through book 6 in record time. very entertaining, very enjoyable and builds well on existing characters, story line and the general story world.
You are part of the lives of the main characters and you can relate to the decisions made and reason for courses of action; brilliant.
The only disappointment is the American Cliff Hanger Ending, where the hero... well let's not give it away. So far though the author has 'rounded off' their story with a final chapter after the highlight of the story which showed how our hero's went on from there and made me look forward to the next book. With this book there has been a departure from the rounding off and after the big final scene, the book kinda ends with a implied 'more to come next season'.
I personally really dislike this. Eventually, every series has to end and finishing a book without a proper finish and an implication what may be next leaves me cold and not really looking forward to the next book.
I will get the next book but .....
Still, all said and done, the Imager Series is brilliant and worth reading and re-listening. Maybe, it will be made into a Movie some time, it would be worth while!
For an accomplished Assassin there seem only to be memories and accounts of botched jobs barley pulled out of the fire by a combination of luck, circumstance and miracle. And the pattern continues.
There is a good amount of well established and well developed characters; a great little world full of variation and colour but it seems that this Authors train is just running back and forth on the same rail with little or no real variation and a lot of incidental repetition.
If you have read book 1 through 7 than you will know what I mean; if not do start at book one as the read is great and only starts being very predictable around book 4 or 5.
No Explosions, well some but it is not an action filled stpory with constant twists and turns but a well written tale of an unusual person who discovers their power and abilities in a time when they are needed. More along the lines, where a world is created whilst a story is told; whilst you seem to be a part of the story.
Brilliant, i will be a fan of the series and author!
Great, Short Sharp Stories, all with something to tell; all looking at different type of Warriors. And due to all the different authors you really do get a varied and interesting variety of similar based but very different characters. Well worth the read and good value even if it cost twice as much.
Actually, that part put me off a bit. At times it seemed like it was all about bed play. I am not a prude and don't mind some explicid descriptions, yet these seemed repetative and, for my part, unimagenative.
OK, that out of the way, the story of a race of people who may have been the source of the Vampire legend, how they live and how they can turn into the ugly type of vampire and how there is only two choice, Die or... well that's the story.
I wouldn't read a 2nd book in this series, but i well enjoyed this book. I don't know if i will look at a lot of books from this author.
I don't like stories that start in the middle and then do flashbacks; can be very irritating; but this one could not have been differently. It is a very unusual story that slowly unfolds and spans the life of a 50 year old man who lives for 10's of thousands of years.
If you are looking for an unuisal Sifi that has little or no techno and focuses on the story of two races of people, and is quite ... morish, this is it. If you need a change from the usual; go for it!
It has all the indicators of possibly being a good set of characters, world and story but it just didn't quite do it for me. I stopped half way through as the pattern of story seemed to repeat.
I was looking forward to a whole lot of short stories as i have been listening to some epic multi-book serieses. So initially i was wrapped as it was exactly what i wanted but it just didn't grow on me and seem to be repetative.
The orator was good and the feel of the story was good but....
I can't say that there is anything particularly special or unique about the story. Our Hero genetically modified and empathic, her sentient Tree Cat, A devious and often treacherous enemy....hmmmm.
Having completed the 12th book (i think) i am eagerly awaiting the 13th. The whole series is brilliantly .... choreographed with excellent supporting character, clever storyline, mini plots and very well paced development of the "honorverse".
The narrator was also well chosen and significantly added (for me) to the enjoyment of the whole series starting with this book!
