  • Kafka on the Shore

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 12 mins)
    • By Haruki Murakami
    • Narrated By Sean Barrett, Oliver Le Sueur
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

With Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami gives us a novel every bit as ambitious and expansive as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which has been acclaimed both here and around the world for its uncommon ambition and achievement, and whose still-growing popularity suggests that it will be read and admired for decades to come.

Dr. Curmudgeon says: "What's better than Murakami? More Murakami"
    "extraordinary performance for wonderful story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

From the start, it pulled me in and was a great escape from ordinary life. Perplexing, great story, amazing performance.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Kafka on the Shore?

    Colonel Sanders.

What about Sean Barrett and Oliver Le Sueur ’s performance did you like?

There is no way I would have gone as deep into the story without the performance these guys put on.

  • Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

    • UNABRIDGED (41 hrs and 32 mins)
    • By Doris Kearns Goodwin
    • Narrated By Suzanne Toren

On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Amazon Customer says: "Beautiful, Heartbreaking, and Informative"
    "wonderful experience"
Where does Team of Rivals rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best audiobooks I have purchased from audible, this and 1Q84.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    the Prez. He was incredible.

Have you listened to any of Suzanne Toren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Any additional comments?

It took a little time to get into the book. But once that happened it was like a suspense story--even though I knew the ending. What a wonderful experience.

  • Imperium: A Novel of Ancient Rome

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Robert Harris
    • Narrated By Simon Jones

When Tiro, the confidential secretary (and slave) of a Roman senator, opens the door to a terrified stranger on a cold November morning, he sets in motion a chain of events that will eventually propel his master into one of the most suspenseful courtroom dramas in history.

Karen says: "Great Naration, Great Book"
    "memorable in a subtle way"
What made the experience of listening to Imperium the most enjoyable?

It slowly took me in to the point where I couldn't stop reading. When it ended I wanted more and it prompted me to do some more reading on Cicero. It made me grow a tiny bit.

What does Simon Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Very solid, easy to hear narrator. He seemed like a perfect fit for this book.

    Any additional comments?

An entirely pleasant way to escape February in Minnesota and, at the same time, think about a period in time that I don't know much about. It also gave me some reason to think a little about my job as lawyer.

  • So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Cal Newport
    • Narrated By Dave Mallow
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

    Taliho says: "Outstanding!"
"Buy this book if you are over 50"
Would you listen to So Good They Can't Ignore You again? Why?

    Yes. Good advice. Thought-provoking ideas.

What other book might you compare So Good They Can't Ignore You to and why?

Some of Peter Drucker's works on knowledge workers and second act careers.

    Any additional comments?

Cal Newport's work is an important contribution to career-planning books. Unlike the reviewer who recommends not to buy the book if you are over 30, I would heartily recommend it for those new to the world of work as well as those who have many years under their belt. Cal's advice on mission plan and good use of career capital can be put to good use by someone who has been in the knowledge working world for a while. If there is a shortcoming, it might be that Cal's perspective is at times narrowed by his academic career. Some of his advice could use refining or evolution for those of us in business. But it is a very good start and, hopefully, not his last contribution to this important area.
