I was hoping to find a sci-fi series that would make a good listen during runs and trips over the next few months. After listening to this first book, I will not be purchasing any more of the series. Although the story and characters are somehwat interesting, the portrayal of military leadership as inept and ineffective is totally unrealistic. In fact, I felt it was an insult to all who have served in the military to characterize their institutions as suffering from gross failings in leadership as described in this novel. I recommend you find a sci-fi book/series that more accurately describes the type of men and women who rise to lead our militaries effectively through their hard work, dedication to their countries, and supreme self-sacrifices.
Delete the numerous detailed, middle-schoolish descriptions of various sex scenes. Also, lose the obvious left-wing political bent by having at least one positive character who represents opposing views.
Maybe. It was a very interesting and personal description of events during a key period of modern world history. But, the book's shortcomings of sex scenes and political bias would make me pause before reading another one.
Yes, and he's always outstanding. I probably would have lost interest and quit the book early had it not been for his outstanding ability to tell a story.
Only to think twice before reading another book by Ken Follett.
Interesting, creative storyline.
Unfortunately, the actual story telling was extremely tedious and often boring. The writer managed somehow to provide long and vivid descriptions of situations and events without ever really developing the characters as someone you felt you knew and understood. I finshed the book, but only because I didn't have anything else to listen to at the time.
Obviously, the audiobook is a little long for most in today's fast-paced world. But, I found the depth and detailed descriptions of the hearts and thoughts of the key characters surprizingly enjoyable. The reader was very good, and he added depth to the story by the way he portrayed the various personalities with slight variations of speech. I would highly recommend this book for a good, long, enjoyable listen. If you lose track of the characters, just catch up by reviewing what's going on using one of the many available 'cliff notes' online.
