America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse in the near future. The stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city.

    Hugh says: "Accidentally Good"
"Frightening scenario for the future of the US"
    Overall

Patriots is a political novel that promotes an agenda of states’ rights populism, right wing Christianity, pro-Second Amendment rights, anti-UN views, and survivalism that is cast in the near future amidst a financial collapse, the result of overwhelming national debt, hyperinflation, and a stock market crash.

This novel focuses on many technical and paramilitary topics that may not be enjoyable reading for many – even if they share the author’s politics. Perhaps there is no way to cover such topics in an “enjoyable” manner and that the point of this book is exactly that – life in a post-collapse America, reduced to a barter economy with massive civil unrest, will be difficult, reduced to a struggle to survive.

The author avoids the “UN helicopter” paranoia found in some contemporary literature of a similar genre and uses the format of a novel, tracing the lives of characters and their families as a vehicle to present its political message. However, if you do not have an interest in paramilitary subjects or don’t enjoy extended discussions of firearms, radio communications, survivalist medicine and other issues, which comprise a large portion of the dialog between the characters; then you may wish to use your Audible credits elsewhere.

Patriots references many useful materials on a wide variety of survivalist topics that can be used for further “study” if the reader is so inclined. In the print version these references may be easier to access.

The story line is entertaining with good, but predictable, characters that are used to deliver the political message. The author presents a frightening, but believable, scenario for the future. It should be well received by many who are in tune with its message, but unfortunately will most likely be dismissed by those who could benefit most from it – those who are in denial about the issues facing our nation and a “head in the sand” attitude that such a scenario as described in Patriots “could never happen here.”

Maddie James and her colleagues are terrorism experts working in a crumbling intelligence agency. They are certain another terrorist attack is coming, but in a post-9/11 election year the Administration is stressing its victories in the War on Terror - and few want to hear the team's warnings. Reluctantly, Maddie's given a team of five analysts to focus on the impending threat. The crew labors through bureaucratic obstacles, personal problems, and a blossoming romance between its senior members. They come heartbreakingly close to stopping the attack....

Julia says: "Not your typical spy novel...."
"Comical, light-hearted, perspective of the CIA."
    Overall

Fans of Vince Flynn would be well advised to be in touch with the feminine side if they are to enjoy this book. Popping a Premarin, or two, before reading or listening to Ms. Hasler’s novel might help, too.

The audio production is outstanding with the readers conveying the essence of the characters in natural voices that enhance the storyline.

My only criticism is that the author’s political views vis a vis Iraq were thinly veiled and repeated ad nauseum, but perhaps that was her primary objective when she put pen to paper. Despite my differing political views with the author, I still found “Intelligence” an entertaining listen. If prospective listeners have strong political views in support of the justification for the Iraq War, they should consider whether these would prevent them from appreciating this novel before purchasing it.

When you're the best at what you do, it's not always easy to walk away. Nathan McBride was retired. The trained Marine sniper and covert CIA operative had put the violence of his former life behind him. But not anymore. A deep-cover FBI agent has disappeared along with one ton of powerful Semtex explosive, enough to unleash a disaster of international proportions. The U.S. government has no choice but to coax Nathan out of retirement.

Ed says: "Sniper thriller par excellence"
"Predictable Characters, Plot, Love Interest, etc."
    Overall

This book was a big disappointment from beginning to end. Domestic terrorists commit mayhem upon “Dudley DoRight” federal agents who are relunctantly forced to turn to our hero, Nathan MacBride, along with his trusty sidekick Harvey. Of course, Nathan, despite being horribly disfigured from past torture while a captured CIA agent, meets a stunningly attractive federal agent who within 24 hours of meeting falls into bed with our hero, satisfying her as none of her previous lovers. Oh please! Naturally, it takes our hero to bring about the capture of the bad guys as he righteously shreds the Constitutional rights of anybody who gets in the way.
If you are intellectually challenged by “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” this is a thriller for you!

In Marching Toward Hell, Scheuer offers a scathing and frightening look at how the Iraq war has contributed to the enemy's strength and fundamentally changed the geopolitical landscape in a way that is harmful to U.S. interests and security concerns. Scheuer will examine the ways in which the war has widened the conflict by almost every measure, made America less secure, and increasingly vulnerable to attack.

    Overall

Even though I disagree with the author on a variety of points, I found this book challenging. It made me examine my basic assumptions about the Middle East, Islam, the War on Terror, the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the US relationship with Israel, etc. Unfortunately, the abridgement left me longing for further details and input from the author. To date, no unabridged audiobook version is available. How can I decide if the author’s ideas are with, or without, merit unless I am unable to read, or listen to, his entire line of reasoning? This will be the last “abridged” non-fiction audio production that I ever purchase.
