Professional narration would have been a big plus. Feels more like chatty lecture than audiobook.

When Yahoo hired star Google executive Mayer to be its CEO in 2012 employees rejoiced. They put posters on the walls throughout Yahoo's California headquarters. On them there was Mayer's face and one word: HOPE. But one year later, Mayer sat in front of those same employees in a huge cafeteria on Yahoo's campus and took the beating of her life. Her hair wet and her tone defensive, Mayer read and answered a series of employee-posed questions challenging the basic elements of her plan.

Where does Marissa Mayer and the Fight to Save Yahoo! rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In my top 10 business titles. An interesting timely story.

What other book might you compare Marissa Mayer and the Fight to Save Yahoo! to and why?

Similar to many other bios. A scan of the journey... then a selection of defining moments... then add some snippets / characters and you get an interesting view of Yahoos growing pains as framed by some interesting events.

What about Kiff VandenHeuvel’s performance did you like?

Easy to listen to voice. Not much dramatization, though none is really needed.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not quite... an enjoyable summary of different phases in the life of Yahoo and MM. A few good places to pause and pick up later. A good companion during windshield time.

    Any additional comments?

Enjoyed the ride. Whether you're a Yahoo / MM fan or critic, I'd suggest the book does a fair job of capturing the raw ambition that pervades the modern tech landscape. Some great inside information that helps you get a feel for how Yahoo is growing (or not)... by trial and error. Big money... Big egos... Big bets.

  • Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

If you could sum up Quiet in three words, what would they be?

    Revealing and insightful

Who was your favorite character and why?

As a non-fiction work, characters are not the focus of the book, but Ms.Cain did a deft job of weaving together pieces of research with everyday observations.

What about Kathe Mazur’s performance did you like?

Her performance as smooth... with a voice well matched the the subject matter.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

There's a distinct difference between being quiet and shy.

All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. What Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother reveals is that the Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions and providing a nurturing environment. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect your children is by preparing them for the future and arming them with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes I'd recommend for another point of view. Ms. Chua's approach is perhaps not for everyone, but the book offers some unique reflections on how to train your children.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

More yet to be written. Ripe for a follow up that can reflect on the results of parenting "the Chinese way".

What three words best describe Amy Chua’s voice?

    Calm, deliberate, cool

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

January 2006. In the Swedish hamlet of Hesjvallen, nineteen people have been massacred. The only clue is a red ribbon found at the scene. Judge Birgitta Roslin has particular reason to be shocked: Her grandparents, the Andrns, are among the victims, and Birgitta soon learns that an Andrn family in Nevada has also been murdered. She then discovers the 19th-century diary of an Andrn ancestora gang master on the American transcontinental railwaythat describes brutal treatment of Chinese slave workers.

An interesting listen. Fine narration. Story unfolds slowly. Patience is required to enjoy. Clever use of history and backstory.
