A complete re-write with logical dialogue and characters that I could care about.
Do a much better job of developing the story line, and characters.
I would "normally" suggest Will Patton---but I'm hopeful that Will looked at this poor, poor freshman high school novel and decided to take a nap instead.
Incredible disappointment. I have enjoyed all of Burke's other novels...some more than others but this book is TERRIBLE!
Why? Why? Why?...what a terrible experience. I stuck with it to the end with some sliver of hope it would have a surprise ending--like "surprise! It's not as terrible as you thought it would be!" But no...it was worse.
I have several books from James Lee Burke and most are good and some are very good. Every book read by Will Patton makes them better. That said...I will not be buying any further "new" books from Mr. Burke because the quality of the story here is so lacking in every respect. F-
This book has turned me off from buying any new book by this author. I'm not sure if he is just getting old--78--or if he has run out of ideas but this is the first book that I truly regretted buying and listening to the end.Why did I listen to the end? Good question...because I wanted to write this review and to truthfully say I gave it every chance. It's just simply a terrible book. If I had Mr. Burke's gift for words I would write several pages here that all equal "Just Terrible".
Will Patton always does a good job. Always!
With the exception of Grandpa, all of them. Yes...Grandpa is not a good person and wasn't for most of his life but he's at least true to his character and interesting. All of the remaining MAIN characters exercise poor judgement on a daily basis and have bad things happen to them as a result. Which makes perfect sense. And also makes it hard to feel any sympathy for the situations in which they find themselves. It's like a guy that walks into a rough neighborhood who shouts bad names at the people living there and then SUDDENLY finds himself in a bad situation. I don't feel bad for this person. I just think they are an idiot.
I have been an audible customer for many years and have a few thousand dollars worth of books. I have purchased books in the past that I haven't been happy with but I took a chance hoping perhaps to find a gem in the crowd of stories out there. When a favorite author delivers something this bad...it's a big disappointment.
Adam Carolla has always been interesting but I thought this multi-hour book with Adam reading was a treat. He seems like a guy you'd just like to have a beer with. Good book...highly recommended listen.
What a nice surprise! I have been looking for a new historical series for some time and this one is a hit. I bought and listened to the second in the series immediately after finishing this one and downloaded the next 2 in the series. Of course...John Lee is usually very good but he was great in this one.
It's a good listen but I didn't feel the "depth" in this book that I have in many others. Still...it was a good story.
It moved along well.
Interesting author with his own story.
I didn't read the print version of this book but I have read pride and prejudice and was surprised that the author was able to do a good job of maintaining the sense of the original.
I got into these books because of the Showtime series. The concept is good--bad guy kills other bad guys that like to do bad things to good people--but the writing gets worse and worse with each book. It like Charles Bronson and the Death Wish movies...the first one was good but by Death Wish 5--even deathier...you realize the ideas are all gone and the hope for improved dialog is just wishful thinking. This guy can't write, he has a lazy editor that basically checks for spelling errors and correct punctuation instead of challenging Jeff to improve and a publisher (also lazy) that is laughing all the way to the bank thinking he can't beleive this stuff sells. Successful actors often start acting classes to hone their craft...time for night school everyone;-((
I bought this book because of the book reviews and the movie. Big MISTAKE. Why does an author think he can narrate? It is so sad. I guess it's cheaper than hiring a professional but the results are...you guessed it..."unprofessional". Honor the work in the future. Hire someone that knows what they are doing. THIS IS THE LAST BOOK I GET NARRATED BY THE AURTHOR!
