I enjoyed the 10 Faces of Innovation. With innovation becoming a requirement of successful businesses, it was interesting to see it broken down so professionally by someone within IDEO...a company always mentioned in articles on innovation.
I got the most out of this book by listening to the stories told and trying to figure out how I could apply them to my own business.
Things are changing quickly, and no matter what business you're in, change can happen overnight. This book can help you keep on looking for fresh, innovative approaches for your business success.
I'm an unapologetic fan of Tina Fey, so I was looking forward to this audiobook. It didn't disappoint, especially since she can deliver her writing better than anyone else. Funny stories of growing up as a bit of an outsider were mixed w/some sound advice on leadership and making it in the corporate world.
My only complaint? Too short. I could have listened to a few more hours of the thoughts rattling around in Fey's mind.
My wife and I found this novel incredibly rich, detailed and thrilling, just like the first book. It's amazing how layered these novels are, and how fascinating the characters are. There's just so much going on besides the main plot. We found ourselves laughing out loud at certain parts, cringing at others, and outraged at still others. The book has action, mystery, intrigue and sharp writing. I strongly recommend it.
If you read and enjoyed the first book, Freakonomics, listening to the 2nd one is a no-brainer. If you haven't, you don't need to worry about going in order. These are just a series of interesting stories about how people are influenced by incentives. Like books by Malcolm Gladwell, this book will make you think.
This book is utterly brilliant The mashup of Austen and zombies is fantastically clever, and the juxtaposition of the strict societal rules and monster-fighting adds a whole new level of conflict. The fact that in polite society you almost never hear them referred to as "zombies" is great. This is a cut and paste, it's a reimagining of the original book.
I found myself laughing out loud often, and loving Kellgren, the narrator. Her British accent makes the audiobook even better than it's print companion.
I was excited to read this book since the chapter Why Crack Dealers Live with Their Moms was one of my favorite chapters of Freakonomics.
It didn't disappoint. All the characters were fascinating and I'd love to know more about where they ended up.
Having just finished the final episode of HBO's The Wire, this audiobook was the perfect desert to that fantastic series. They are both rich with complex characters.
This was one of the best audiobooks I've ever downloaded from Audible.
Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged both come with a lot of baggage. Some people love it, others loathe it.
Bottom line, this story is epic in scope. I've read the book before, and now my wife and I are listening to it together every chance we get. We discuss the ideas, talk about the characters, and often laugh at the two-dimensional characters.
Yes, it's true. This book's plot is amazing, and thoroughly enjoyable on a lot of levels. It truly is a classic. However, a lot of the writing makes us laugh out loud. Especially in discussing sex and relationships.
Selfish business people are held up as heroes. They have no faults. Sensitive, empathic business owners and gov't types are all portrayed as sniveling losers. Everything is black and white; none of the characters are complex, although many are fascinating. I find myself wanting to chat with Hank Reardon or Dagny Taggart, or bounce business ideas off them.
If you've got the patience, this book is worth the listen. Even if you consider yourself to be liberal and fear big business more than big government, this book is a fascinating read.
Although I don't believe in the absolutes that Rand puts out there, it did "rewire" my brain, and allowed me to view current events through an additional point of view. It challenged me to defend some of my deep-seated beliefs, and even discard a couple.
And isn't that the kind of challenge that's worth your time?
