In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

    Overall

I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books of this series. The plot is complex and the author does a good job of character development.

The first three books are filled with intrigue, plots and war. This is not usually what interests me in a fantasy book but Martin's characters kept me captivated.

My one complaint is that I feel that his world lacks beauty and grace. Tolkien this is not. In Martin's world it is the villians and louts that seem to prosper. This is a book of trechery and blind honor. Martin does not shrink from killing off his characters.

The story line moves slowly, in part I think because he spends so much time developing his characters and a very complex story line.

The writing is far bettter than Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

I reccomend this book. The reader is really terrific.

Spy, rogue, thief, and noble, Seregil of Rhiminee is many things, none of them predictable. And when he offers to take on Alec as his apprentice, things may never be the same for either of them. Soon Alec is traveling roads he never knew existed, toward a war he never suspected was brewing. Before long he and Seregil are embroiled in a sinister plot that runs deeper than either can imagine and that may cost them far more than their lives if they fail. But fortune is as unpredictable as Alec's new mentor.

    "Romantic Fantasy"
    Overall

I enjoyed this book and the second book in the series (Stalking Darkness) as well. I hope Audible picks up the third.

It is the only fantasy book I have read that has a very believable romance that slowly (and tastefully) builds between two male characters. I almost hesitate to put that in the review because it is not what the book is about, yet it is what I found to be the most compelling part of the book.

The plot is pretty standard fantasy fare good confronting evil, but it carried my interest. I thought it was better than Rorbert Jordan's Wheel of Time books that go ON and ON and ON.

Amidst the decaying splendor and poisonous intrigue of Chalion's ancient capital, Cazaril is forced to confront not only powerful enemies but also the malignant curse that clings to the royal household, trapping him, flesh and soul, in a maze of demonic paradox, damnation, and death for as long as he dares walk the five-fold pathway of the gods.

Pete says: "Excellent Fantasy... Epic in feel, finite in pace"
    "Mature Fantasy"
    Overall

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting. The world the author described is original and detailed.

The protagonist succeeds through the moral strength of his character.

I would recommend this book to readers who were past their teen years and wanted something a little different than the typical fantasy book.

When Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon decide to spy on a presentation her uncle, the commanding Lord Asriel, is making to the elders of Jordan College they have no idea that they will become witnesses to an attempted murder, and even less that they are taking the first steps in a journey that will lead them into danger and adventure unlike anything Lyra's unfettered imagination has conjured up.

    Arnold says: "A Terrific Book"
"Highly Original - Really a nice read."
    Overall

I really enjoyed these three books. Mr. Pullman has created an interesting universe full of strange beings and ideas. This is the second book and the one I enjoyed the most. I enjoyed the evil characters as much as the heroines. You don't often find well developed bad guys in fantasy writing.

  • The Monsters of Morley Manor

Monsters, aliens, ghosts, giant frogs, and a tragic angel are just some of the ingredients of this madcap adventure that is quite possibly Bruce Coville's strangest novel yet. Bruce himself appears on this recording as Gaspar Morley, head of a strange family of monsters that draw Anthony (our narrator) and his little sister Sarah into a galaxy - spanning adventure with the very souls of Earth's dead at stake.

    keynotes says: "Fun!"
    "Nice Family Story"
    Overall

This is a nice story to share as a family. It is funny and inventive. Sometimes it verges on the silly but that is just fine.
