Michael Fiske broke the law when he took Rufus Harms's prison letter from the Supreme Court. But he also sealed his own fate. Now Michael's brother, a cop turned attorney, is coming to Washington to find out why his brother was murdered - and what it had to do with a crime that Rufus Harms committed 25 years before.

I love David Baldacci's books but this reader should never be allowed close to one! His reading of prose was miserable - stabbed each sentence at the top of the octave regardless of its comtent and ended at the bottom! His dialog was marginally better. I almost ditched it before I finished the first chapter but my curiosity got the better of me! I am used to Ron McLarty's excellent rendition but Jonathan Marosz has got to go!

In the LAPD's Open-Unsolved Unit, not many murder victims die almost a decade after the crime. So when a man succumbs to complications from being shot by a stray bullet nine years earlier, Bosch catches a case in which the body is still fresh, but all other evidence is virtually nonexistent. Now Bosch and rookie Detective Lucia Soto, are tasked with solving what turns out to be a highly charged, politically sensitive case.

Would you try another book from Michael Connelly and/or Titus Welliver?

I enjoy Michael Connelly's books but I will avoid ever having to endure another of Titus Welliver's sophomoric readings - dialogs were ok but in between? - boring and bored performance. He sounds as if he's just trying to get through the book without thinking about it. Michael Connelly deserves much better!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

    Yes - convoluted and clever

How did the narrator detract from the book?

See comments above - he came close to causing me to abandon the book within the first couple of pages

Do you think The Burning Room needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

It doesn't need one but it might be interesting - with a different reader!

  • April Fool's Day

This is Bryce Courtenay's moving tribute to his son, Damon, a hemophiliac who died from medically acquired AIDS on April 1, 1991, at the age of 24. April Fool's Day is controversial, painful and heartbreaking, yet has a gentle humor. It is also life-affirming, and, above all, a testimony to the incredible regenerative strength of love: how when we confront our worst, we can become our best. This tragic yet uplifting story will change the way you think.

What made the experience of listening to April Fool's Day the most enjoyable?

The honesty of the story and compassionate delivery.

What was one of the most memorable moments of April Fool's Day?

Damon's first major bleed as a toddler; the showdown with the Emergency Department just before Damon's death.

Have you listened to any of Humphrey Bower’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Humphrey Bower is AMAZINGLY talented! He is so adept at adapting his accents to each character, regardless of ethnic/national origin, he makes the story come totally alive. I have listened to most of Bryce Courtenay's books in part because of Bower's delivery. He is a wonder!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    ..?

    Any additional comments?

Bryce Courtenay's books have taught me so much of the various countries, areas and historical events and, now, about the experiences of a hemophiliac and his family. I had no idea - and I have worked in healthcare all my life!

The Persimmon Tree opens in Indonesia in 1942 on the cusp of Japanese invasion and the evacuation of Batavia (Jakarta) by the Dutch. Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Duncan is on holiday there, in pursuit of an exotic butterfly known as the Magpie Crow. It's an uncertain, dangerous time to be in Indonesia, and Nick's options of getting out are fast dwindling. Amidst the fear and chaos he falls in love with Anna, the beautiful daughter of a Dutch acquaintance, and she nicknames him 'Mr Butterfly'.

What made the experience of listening to The Persimmon Tree the most enjoyable?

Humphrey Bower is a fabulous performer with an amazing ability to give real personality to the various characters, so there is no doubt who is speaking. His talent for accents is outstanding!

Who was your favorite character and why?

It has to be Anna but Til (spelling?) is a second!

What does Humphrey Bower bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The characters' voices! He is so talented - there is no way to fully appreciate a book like this by simply reading it.

If you could rename The Persimmon Tree, what would you call it?

I can't think of anything that wouldn't sound trite - it is well-named.

    Any additional comments?

I might have liked a more extended ending - it was a bit abrupt. Maybe Mr Courtenay didn't want to emphasize the details of Anna's withdrawal and recovery? Overall, though, I found it really educational since I was not well-versed in Australia's involvement with the Japanese in WW II. Great book!

Drafted against her will to become a "Sparrow" - a trained seductress in the service, Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a first-tour CIA officer who handles the CIA's most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America's valuable mole in Moscow.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    No

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

When I could sort it out from the abysmal reading! I love good spy stories but I hate to have to work so hard at listening!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jeremy Bobb?

Almost anyone who has knowledge of the Russian language! Ron McLarty might have been my choice perhaps or maybe Wanda McCadden?

    Any additional comments?

Jeremy Bobb almost destroys the content of the story with his complete lack of imagination and variation in tone. He sounds as if he were reading a textbook - it is hard to discern when one character ends a sentence and another responds. Keeping track of the storyline and political maneuverings is almost impossible since it is all read in the same monotone. What a disservice to the author to assign such a miserable reader to his extraordinary work!

  • Immortal Diamond: The Search for Our True Self

In his best-selling book Falling Upward, Richard Rohr talked about ego (or the False Self) and how it gets in the way of spiritual maturity. But if there's a False Self, is there also a True Self? What is it? How is it found? Why does it matter? And what does it have to do with the spiritual journey? This book likens True Self to a diamond, buried deep within us, formed under the intense pressure of our lives, that must be searched for, uncovered, separated from all the debris of ego that surrounds it.

Would you consider the audio edition of Immortal Diamond to be better than the print version?

I have not yet read the print version although I have ordered it. I listened to this as my morning meditation while riding the bus to work and it gave me lots to think about and be challenged by. I think I would have preferred Richard Rohr's reading of it although I did eventually get used to Kevin Pierce's voice.

What did you like best about this story?

It's not a "story" but a challenge and spiritual awakening.

What aspect of Kevin Pierce’s performance would you have changed?

I think that, in his attempt to be really clear and flawless, Kevin sounded too stiff and robotic. However, it was not as disturbing the longer I listened to him.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely not - too much to reflect on! There is a gem in almost every paragraph! Lots of "aha" moments.

    Any additional comments?

Read it! I have ordered extra copies to give to friends and I plan to read it to my husband each night, as I have been doing with Falling Upward, another Richard Rohr book.

A former television producer and journalist who has covered assignments from Washington to the Middle East, Silva fills The Marching Season with the political suspense that churns through present-day Northern Ireland. In 1998, as the Good Friday peace accords go into effect, world leaders hope for an end to the bloody Irish troubles, but terrorists are moving to shatter that fragile peace through a series of brutal assassinations. CIA Officer Michael Osbourne’s job is to stop October, their deadliest hit man.

This is yet another case of a great story in the wrong hands! Frank Muller gives each sentence the same weight as the next, whether describing a trivial act (such as pulling on a pair of gloves) or describing an erotic or fight scene. Daniel Silva is such a fabulous story-teller, it is disappointing to have one of his books be mauled by such an unimaginative narrator. Even the dialogue was so much less believable than it might have been. Sad!

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

    Overall

This was the most wonderful, heart-breaking,joyful,maddening,most beautifully told book I have ever read/heard - listening to the stories instead of just reading them made it all SO real. I have been blessed to know and love women so like Abeline (what a fabulous reader!)and Minnie, particularly, but also like many of the other characters, and have heard their stories of the indignities and worse suffered by their families. It is more than time for these stories to be told. I never wanted this book to end and can't wait for Ms Stockett's next book to be offered by Audible.
