  • Night Broken: Mercy Thompson, Book 8

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Patricia Briggs
    • Narrated By Lorelei King
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from a stalker. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right. Soon her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the furthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get him, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

    Hassan says: "Good Addition!!"
"Wonderful new addition to the Mercy Thompson serie"
If you could sum up Night Broken in three words, what would they be?

Thoroughly enjoyable, as usual. Lorelei King is the perfect narrator for this series. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

What did you like best about this story?

The character of Mercy Thompson is someone you can really enjoy.

Which character – as performed by Lorelei King – was your favorite?

Mercy, although I have a weak spot for Stefan, the Scooby Doo t-shirt wearing vampire.

  • Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs)
    • By H. P. Mallory
    • Narrated By Allyson Ryan

Life isn’t bad for psychic Jolie Wilkins. True, she doesn’t have a love life to speak of, but she has a cute house in the suburbs of Los Angeles, a cat, and a quirky best friend. Enter Rand Balfour, a sinfully attractive warlock who insists she’s a witch and who just might turn her life upside down. Rand hires her to help him solve a mystery regarding the death of his client who also happens to be a ghost. Jolie not only uncovers the cause of the ghost’s demise but, in the process, she brings him back to life!

    A User says: "disjointed narration"
    "Awful, awful, awful"
What disappointed you about Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble?

Story sounded like it was written by a sexually precocious teen-aged girl. It's one of the few books I couldn't finish. I don't usually write reviews, but this one is bad enough I feel like I need to warn people off.

Would you ever listen to anything by H. P. Mallory again?

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narrator sounded like an airhead. A different narrator might have improved the book slightly.

What character would you cut from Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble?

    The protagonist.

    Any additional comments?

If you want to read some GOOD witchy books, try Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, The Hollows series by Kim Harrison, Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearn (has witches in it), and Secondhand Spirits series by Juliet Blackwell.

  • Hard Magic: Book I of the Grimnoir Chronicles

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Larry Correia
    • Narrated By Bronson Pinchot

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Clinton says: "Not what I thought it was going to be."
    "Fantasy without frilly"
What made the experience of listening to Hard Magic the most enjoyable?

    Great plot line.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hard Magic?

Getting the individual perspectives of the characters

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Fay fighting the Chairman

    Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was different from a lot of the frilly and emotion-tweaking fantasy books out there directed toward female readers. The book was well written, had a great plot, the reader was fabulous, and women didn't need saving. Bravo.

  • First Grave on the Right: Charley Davidson, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Darynda Jones
    • Narrated By Lorelei King
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light”. But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all.

    S. Droski says: "Great choice for Stephanie, Lorelai or Buffy fans!"
    "Stephanie Plum meets the Undead"

With Lorelei King Narrating, it's hard to go wrong. And she made this already entertaining book even better. The author achieved a wonderful balance between funny, vulnerable, sexy and dangerous for the heroine, Charley Davidson. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out!

  • Whiskey Sour: A Jacqueline 'Jack' Daniels Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By J. A. Konrath
    • Narrated By Susie Breck, Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Between avoiding the FBI and their moronic profiling computer, joining a dating service, mixing it up with street thugs, and parrying the advances of an uncouth PI, Lieutenant Jacqueline Daniels and her binge-eating partner Herb must catch a frightening maniac who calls himself "The Gingerbread Man" before he kills again...and Jack is next on his murder list.

Kari says: "Like the book but GRAPHIC details"
    "NOT Janet Evanovich"

I was thoroughly disappointed in the reading of Whiskey Sour. The multiple narrators did NOT help the book, and they tried to make the audio sound like a television audiotrack. That was just wrong. This character was hardbitten and her attempts to be cute with jokes and quips fell short. Overall the story was okay.

  • Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs: Jane Jameson, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Molly Harper
    • Narrated By Amanda Ronconi
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead.

Sandra Ross says: "Laugh-out Loud Funny"
"Right up there with Sookie Stackhouse!"

I REALLY enjoyed this book, and kept thinking that Jane Jameson and Sookie Stackhouse (by Charlaine Harris) should get together for some drinks. What a hoot! I'm exciting to me getting the next in the series.
