In 1918, after four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel.

The story line of this book was a disappointment. I am OK without a happy ending, but this book left me without a sense of satisfaction, interesting reflections, life lessons learned, or any character that I was "glad to have gotten to know".

The narration was well done, however, the narrator's voice fell off at the end of sentences and during dialogue. Thus, I had to play it at a higher volume. I needed to use earbuds while doing housework, rather than playing it over speakers, for the same reason.

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - "Q" is for "question mark". A world that bears a question....

    Story

This very long book had a number of story lines that were interesting at some point, but which fell flat or just petered out. The conclusion left me thinking, "...I just listened to 47 hours of storytelling and the best you can give me is two grade school kids who were fated to be together?". The book made some feeble attempts at being thought provoking and asking interesting questions, but these were short lived, with the story soon headed off in other, more banal directions. Even the fantasy aspects of the novel were never developed. The writing and performance kept me engaged to the end, but there is no part of the story that I am glad to have experienced.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

One of the best books I have ever read or listened to. Wonderful story line, great characters, funny, suspenseful -- and in this audio format, exceptional narration. I have purchased a hard copy of this book for myself, and as gifts for a number of friends. Very highly recommended.
