For more than 30 years, Jonathan Carroll’s writing has defied genre conventions. Known for his novels—including The Land of Laughs, Bones of the Moon, Sleeping in Flame, and many other compelling and often surreal stories—Carroll has also created an eloquent body of short fiction. The Woman Who Married a Cloud brings his stories together for the first time.

I have only listened to a few of the stories so far, but I wanted to share my enthusiasm! So far, the stories have been delightful, interesting, and haunting and both of the narrators are nice to listen to. I will update my review when I have finished all of it, but there are no other audible reviews for this book and I don't think it's getting the credit or interest it deserves!

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

Would you listen to The Night Circus again? Why?

Yes! I have listened to this story countless times now. It gets better every time. The writing is lyrical, the characters are engaging, the story is unique, and the narration is, of course, exquisite.

What did you like best about this story?

The whole book is filled with magic and wonder. It really takes you to another, much more enchanting place.

What about Jim Dale’s performance did you like?

He is one of my favorite narrators. If there is anyone who can truly make a story and its characters come to life, it is Jim Dale. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't adore this narration.

If you could take any character from The Night Circus out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Poppet. She was my favorite character. Everything about her and her brother made me smile. Such vibrant characters!

    Any additional comments?

If you are considering getting this audiobook, just do it. Really. It is a very unique book and is something you will likely listen to more than once, as I have.

    Story
Where does Howl's Moving Castle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

While this may not be at the very top of my list, it is certainly up there. It was fun, different, and the kind of story I could listen to again if I didn't have anything new. I thought the narrator did a wonderful job with the characters and the story moved along at a nice pace. It wasn't the kind of book that I couldn't turn off, but I did truly enjoy it.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that it was different from anything else I have listened to or read, and that is quite an achievement! The characters, though flawed, were utterly likable and well-developed. It was a light, easy listen.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Well, gee, I can't really tell without giving a spoiler! There were some excellent scenes scattered throughout, though!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I was able to turn this book off when it was time to stop, but I looked forward to it each evening when I normally listen.

    Any additional comments?

This is a really fun book, and if you want something on the lighter side with lots of quirky characters and an unusual, whimsical plot, this one is for you!

Outside any city still standing, the Mechanical Circus Tresaulti sets up its tents. Crowds pack the benches to gawk at the brass-and-copper troupe and their impossible feats: Ayar the Strong Man, the acrobatic Grimaldi Brothers, fearless Elena and her aerialists who perform on living trapezes. War is everywhere, but while the Circus is performing, the world is magic. That magic is no accident: Boss builds her circus from the bones out, molding a mechanical company that will survive the unforgiving landscape.

What would have made Mechanique better?

If it had more flow to it, and if the characters were more developed.

What was most disappointing about Genevieve Valentine’s story?

I am nuts about circus stuff, and I am interested by the steampunk genre, but this really didn't satisfy either for me. I only liked a couple of the characters and found the story very hard to focus on. I kept thinking I must have missed something and went back to listen, but I hadn't.

What didn’t you like about Scott Aiello’s performance?

I think some of the fault may be given to the book here, but it seemed that he was inconsistent in which voices he was using for which part, and to be honest, I wasn't quite sure why he used particular voices much of the time. I wouldn't avoid another book that I wanted to listen to if he narrated it, though. I would give him another chance.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It had potential. It seemed unique and some of the characters were interesting. Maybe a more agressive editor could have helped the author collect this story into something better to read/listen to.
