A good idea to have Mr. Golding read his book, but in the end authors are not necessarily voice actors. I felt that Mr. Golding did not bring the passion and horror that is needed to really bring this story to life. Very shocking plot movements, read by an (very obviously) old man in monotone English voice made for an almost comical juxtaposition, one that took away from the story.
Although the 5 minutes or so commentary by the author were interesting, I recommend having this read by someone else.
I was a little apprehensive of the RNIB denoting, potentially, a lower quality. The quality of this audiobook is more than fine. I cannot tell a difference between this and other supposedly higher quality recordings. THE RECORDING QUALITY IS FINE.
Excellent story, misenterpreted by Hollywood into a 'girls night out' romance story. Yes there is romance, but that is not the MAIN point of this book. The headstrong and honourable main character is strident and headstrong FOR HER TIME. This is a novel (I think) about the possibility for strength of character in a woman, an idea that was much more revolutionary when this book was published. Excellent story, excellent performance.
My ONLY complaint is that the narrator misreads the male characters. This would have been perfect if they had had male narrators for the male characters.
This book is very much a work of philosophy. Many of the sentences are meandering philosphical statements that most accessible when read more than once. The performance is monotone (which I suppose is fitting for the story) and tends to be boring. Buy this as a real book to truly access this classic.
The cast of characters all read by believable and passionate voice actors. Each one of them brings back to this period.
This was the most captivating and refreshing work of 'victorian' fiction I have read in a while. While I found Dickens overly descriptive and dry, this work is fresh! It appeals to the 'sensational' style of today's movies while encapsulating the essence of the time period. I would classify this as a pure action\adventure\romance that everyone should listen to.
The story can start off slow... don't let this fool you. If you aren't captured by the end of the first narrative, you probably won't like it.
