  • Taliban

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Ahmed Rashid
    • Narrated By Nadia May

Correspondent Ahmed Rashid brings the shadowy world of the Taliban - the world's most extreme and radical Islamic organization - into sharp focus in this enormously insightful book. He describes the new face of Islamic fundamentalism and explains why Afghanistan has become the world center for international terrorism. The critics hail Rashid's book as "indispensable" and "an excellent political and historical account."

    Peter says: "Excellent"

This was a very good book. I was looking for an explaination to the events that led to the rise of these terrorists. This book was a very good, unbiased account of those events. Like most history, it does not judge, it only explains. It does so in great detail that is sometimes hard to follow, but it is well worth the effort. It also relates the truth of this situation, in no uncertain terms: This is a far more compli
cated issue than it appears. Those countries who we have been led to believe are our allies have a strange conection to this land and its troubles. Very well worth it.

  • Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By James Wesley Rawles
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse in the near future. The stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city.

    Hugh says: "Accidentally Good"
    "More about revolution than survival...."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

There is nothing wrong with this story. Its just not my type of book. About halfway through it, it became evident that this was a book that had a strong political message. That's fine, but it is not what I am interested in reading.
I LOVE books about men and women in survival situations of all types. And I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction in this class of books.
    I loathe books about politics.
So, if you are interested in reading about how private citizens may have to reform the United States government, you may enjoy this book.
If you are looking for a survival story that truly focuses on the types of problems that people in difficult positions may or have faced, and leaves the politics out of it, you might want to look elsewhere.....

What could James Wesley Rawles have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Again, there is nothing wrong with this book. It was just not a book I enjoyed.
Its not for me to tell Mr. Rawles how to write a book. Its obviously a very popular one. That is actually why I purchased it. I figured I would give it a shot.
What would have made me enjoy it more?
Probably cutting out a lot or all of the items about the UN, the Kehoe brothers, the problems with the government, etc and focusing more on problems encountered by the people trying to survive.
While I understand that proficiency with weapons and tactics is an important component of any survival strategy, I also understand that it is probably the easiest to master. It was for me.
Learning to deal with a person who might need surgery, how to handle the outbreak of a fire in a home, farming, gardening, etc. would have been a lot more interesting to read about.
To compare and contrast, I REALLY enjoyed the book "One Second After"

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Nothing. He did a fine job.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Patriots?

The reference to the Kehoe brothers is pretty obvious. I could have done without that. I could have done without a lot of the references to unconstitutional governing, the UN, etc....
Like I said, I have found that I do not enjoy books about politics in most cases. And I certainly do not enjoy them in a fictional setting.
As a bit of background info in a novel where the plot focuses on something else, its fine.
But, I do not enjoy books where it is the bread and butter of the story line.

    Any additional comments?

It might be better to point out on the Audible website that the last line of the description is really about half of the book.

  • Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Anthony Swofford
    • Narrated By Anthony Swofford
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In his New York Times best-selling chronicle of military life, Anthony Swofford weaves his experiences in war with vivid accounts of boot camp, reflections on the mythos of the marines, and remembrances of battles with lovers and family.

Susan C. Jones says: "Candid view of a marine and modern war"
    "Not bad"

This was a good book. Not great, but good. I have not seen the movie, and I am glad I waited to read the book first. From the ads alone, I see major differences. It is an interesting account of a young man facing the event that he had prepared for, but secretly hoped he would never see.
