Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mother's death in childbirth and their father's disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics - their passion for the same woman - that will tear them apart.

I think I would have put this down unfinished if I'd tried reading it. Some of the medical content would have just gone on tooo long. But listening to I was quite interesting, and I'm glad I did. It passed many an hour on the elliptical. I recommend it!

"As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me...." Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may be telling you only half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.

I'm not surprised it will soon be a movie. I could almost picture some of the scenes. Suspenseful and it really pulled me forward through the plot.

This was a very pleasant contrast to some heavier reads. I can kind-of see the plot twists coming now, but I gotta say it was still enjoyable!

I enjoy historical novels if they are not light. I have never read about this period before and it was quite good. The character, especially the Medicus, were well done. I may try a sequel eventually, especially with Simon Vance as a narrator. He is great!

On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war.

I did not find this hard to follow, and I listen while exercising. But you do need to pay attention. It was a very compelling story and unlike any I have read before. I highly recommend it!

  • The Interestings

The summer that Nixon resigns, six teenagers at a summer camp for the arts become inseparable. Decades later the bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. In The Interestings, Wolitzer follows these characters from the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge. The kind of creativity that is rewarded at age 15 is not always enough to propel someone through life at age 30; not everyone can sustain, in adulthood, what seemed so special in adolescence.

Who is A. N. Dyer? & Sons is a literary masterwork for readers of The Art of Fielding, The Emperor’s Children, and Wonder Boys - the panoramic, deeply affecting story of an iconic novelist, two interconnected families, and the heartbreaking truths that fiction can hide.

I'm glad I got this book and wanted to finish it. The men - and almost ALL the characters are men - are so unlikeable .... Sometimes reprehensible, sometimes cowardly, sometimes without any kind of moral compass...completely self-centered and self-destructive. That is the point of the story, I guess. I couldn't stop listening but ended as I began, disliking them ALL.

  • Major Pettigrew's Last Stand: A Novel

You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction.

I really enjoyed this story. I have been listening to a number of serious novels, and felt like something light but not fluffy. This was a perfect choice. Especially good performance by the narrator.
