Good sci-fi stories all have one thing in common: they are about us. A good sci-fi story... a good fantasy story... a good fiction story is always essentially about the human experience. Whether it's human nature, human potential, human failings, human strengths...
What I love most about Card's work is his incredible understanding of the human condition. The setting is just a tool to explore ths. The Worthing Saga is a great example of just that. Card uses this setting to explore so many ideas, from how cultures cause their own downfalls to the deep dark depths of jealousy and hatred.
Where do you find a balance between happiness and free will?
If you were God where would you draw the line?
I loved the book and I give it 4 stars.
I suspect this novel will be rated slightly lower than other Dresden novels due to it's unique nature. In most Dresden Files novels, Harry is figuring out who did what to whom and throwing power around in his battle against evil. This book is a deviation from that formula as Dresden has far less influence over his environment in this story. Still, it full of Butcher's unique witty prose and plot twists that make his books so enjoyable. And... once again... I can't wait for the next book.
The lead characters were... inhuman. You simply couldn't relate to them. And the science was.... unbelievable. I realize that it's science "fiction" but this would have been far more fitting in a fantasy genre. I simply couldn't suspend my disbelief to that extent... it didn't make sense. And to top it all off, I hated the conclusion as well. I had to make myself finish this one.
I'm glad Mr. Hamilton likes to write because this 2nd book in the void trilogy has placed him at the top of my author list.
I love the characters, I hate the characters. I love the plot, I hate the plot. His writing pulls me into the story, creating a world I want to live in with characters I wish were real. And once you care about the characters, you care about the story.
Sci-fi at it's best. Highly recommended.
Hamilton himself has stated that his books aren't for everyone and I'd have to agree. But if you enjoy his style of writing, if you enjoyed Pandora's Star or it's sequel, you're going to love this book. I simply couldn't wait for the next book to be added to Audible. I went straight out and bought the hardcover. (Unfortunately, now I'm going to have to wait for a year or so for him to finish the final book in the trilogy.)
I highly recommend this book (and author) to any sci-fi fans.
The book itself is incredible, and the person who reads it is one of the best I've ever heard. Together it is easily the best audio book I've ever listened to. If you're a fan of any magical realm from any writer's imagination, you're going to love this book. And if you're new to this genre, this book may well ruin you for other lesser works.
