  • God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.

ben capozzi says: "...Though Hitchens Is!"
    "Better read than heard"
    Overall

An excellent book that convincingly proves there is no god. More importantly it shows why religion is at the root of much of the world's problems.

It is a shame that the author chose to read the book. He does not hold his volume constant making it extremely difficult to hear many of the words, especially at the end of sentences.

Because They Hate is a political wake-up call. Brigitte Gabriel, who lost her childhood to militant Islam, warns that the United States is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way that Lebanon was - that radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries. Fiercely articulate and committed, Gabriel both tells her own story and outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

The events that followed changed her life forever. Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems.

Where does The Witness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book was good and I would recommend it. I just thought the author decided she had enough with the story and brought it to an end. I think the Russians tracking Elizabeth to Arkansas could have increased the suspense.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witness?

The scene after the nighclub at the house was memorable.

The Universe is here to remind listeners that they are in control. To have the life they desire, all they have to do is ask. The secret to manifesting change is not focusing on the "how", but instead the end result: the kind of life listeners want. Then, once they are truly focused, the Universe will conspire on the listener's behalf.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I could not stand to listen for more than fifteen minutes as the silly, insipid, annoying, trite one liners got under my skin. I thought I would rather listen to finger nails scratching a blackboard.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Probably not this author's other book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He wrote it. That was a detraction enough.

What character would you cut from Notes from the Universe?

    The author and narrator.

    Any additional comments?

Can I get my money back?

Would you try another book from Sasha Campbell and/or Jennifer Kidwell and Simi Howe ?

Not if it was a similar attempt to distort the English language. The dialogue was an overt attempt to present ghetto- like circumstances but did not enhance the story.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sasha Campbell again?

    No.

What didn’t you like about Jennifer Kidwell and Simi Howe ’s performance?

I'm not sure if they were intolerable or the dialogue made them sound that way.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    I can't say.

Would you try another book from Lawrence Sanders and/or Marc Vietor?

    I don't think so.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lawrence Sanders? Why or why not?

His dialogue is too wordy with much detail on extraneous characters.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    I don't think I had a favorite scene.

Do you think The First Deadly Sin needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No it needs a shorter book.

When turmoil strikes world monetary and financial markets, leaders invariably call for "a new Bretton Woods" to prevent catastrophic economic disorder and defuse political conflict. The name of the remote New Hampshire town where representatives of 44 nations gathered in July 1944, in the midst of the century's second great war, has become shorthand for enlightened globalization.

This book was OK but the narrator was staccato and hard to listen to. The book could have focused more on Bretton Woods and not skip around chronologically.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Philip Rose?

    Anybody

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children, unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery.
