What made the experience of listening to New Sales. Simplified. the most enjoyable?

I was recently asked to take on a sales position at my company. In some ways sales is new to me. Listened to this book gave me a good push in the right direction. I'm sure it saved me from making more than a few mistakes. Ready to listen through again.

Jacob Tomsky has worked in hotels for more than a decade, doing everything from valet parking to manning the front desk. He's checked you in, checked you out, separated your white panties from the white bed sheets, parked your car, tasted your room service, cleaned your toilet, denied you a late check out, given you a wake-up call, eaten M&Ms out of your mini-bar, laughed at your jokes, and taken your money. And in Heads in Beds, he pulls back the curtain on the hospitality business.

This one's like the waiter rant. The workers are frustrated and angry. The only way out is to give them money and even then it never seems to be enough. I learned a lot seeing it from the other side, the story and the performance were well done, but I don't ever want to go to a hotel or a restaurant again.

Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county for more than 20 years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: his 14-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.

Ya can't say anything about the plot without giving things away, it's that surprising. I got a kick out of the characters, lots of humorous descriptions, explanations and motivations. The technique of unfolding the plot by referring back worked well. There were moments when I found the father's defense of his son was a little creepy.

Nick Corey is a terrible sheriff on purpose. He doesn't solve problems, enforce rules or arrest criminals. He knows that nobody in tiny Potts County actually wants to follow the law and he is perfectly content lazing about, eating five meals a day, and sleeping with all the eligible women. Still, Nick has some very complex problems to deal with. Two local pimps have been sassing him, ruining his already tattered reputation.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

    no

Would you ever listen to anything by Jim Thompson again?

    probably not

Could you see Pop. 1280 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    no

    Any additional comments?

Good story and could have been a lot of fun but when the Sheriff starts killing people it takes a turn for the worse. There's no reason for it. Could have been more entertaining if the old boy had come up with some wild convoluted backwoods kind of humiliation. Murdering the poor old black guy just didn't fit.
John McLain does a great job, I'll look for him again

We are excited to present our members with a gift that is truly unique: an original essay, available exclusively here at Audible, written and voiced by best-selling author – and fellow listener – Ann Patchett. This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage is a very real love story, and one that is much more about the journey than the destination.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I listened through waiting for things to change. Ex Catholic, the problems of being too pretty, divorce, bad family history, handsome-rich-real-guy-doctor who wants to marry you, but you won't for eleven years until he's ready to die, airplane flight through a snowstorm, no kids. The best part is that she gets along with the first wife. I've had a happy marriage for thirty years and it doesn't involve any of this nonsense.

    Any additional comments?

Hey maybe next Christmas we can listen to stories about people who regret they won the lottery.
