Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

In this book, C.S. Lewis tells of his search for joy, a spiritual journey that led him from the Christianity of his early youth into atheism and then back to Christianity.

What made the experience of listening to Surprised by Joy the most enjoyable?

    C. S. Lewis has a way of using the English language that pleases, and he is in fine form in Surprised by Joy.

What did you like best about this story?

I think I liked the simplicity of it best--he is a Christian apologist in many of his writings, and it might have been easy to cast this in the mode of Augustine, but he avoids the temptation.

What about Geoffrey Howard???s performance did you like?

I liked Howard's transparency--his performance is straightforward, not getting in the way of Lewis' prose.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to a lot of books in the car, driving my son back and forth to training sessions and games, so listening all in one sitting isn't really an option for me. However, it was hard to stop listening whenever I got to my destination.

    Any additional comments?

I'd recommend this book to anyone.

  • The Children of Hurin

There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

What did you like best about The Children of Hurin? What did you like least?

The Children of Hurin is more difficult than LOTR or the Hobbit, though not as hard to get through as the Silmarillion. I think I'd have found it less ponderous had the performer been less consciously reading

Would you be willing to try another book from J. R. R. Tolkien? Why or why not?

I would definitely buy more books from Tolkien.

What three words best describe Christopher Lee???s voice?

I thought the voice was too dramatic, too overtly Gandalfish.

Was The Children of Hurin worth the listening time?

I'm preparing to teach a class on the Inklings, and one of my weaknesses is a lack of depth in Tolkien, particularly the LOTR backstory material, so the listening time was definitely worthwhile.
